Henry Rollins and Josh Mostel ad-libbed most of their lines.
Charlie Sheen, when on the phone with his attorney, tells him that he's the only honest man he knows. He used this same line in Wall Street (1987) after his dad (Martin Sheen) was hospitalized after suffering a heart attack.
Accidentally shown at the Dublin Film Festival as part of a classics retrospective instead of the Marlon Brando movie of the same name.

The opening scene where Jackson Hammond pulls into the Coastal gas station (located at the corner of Texas Avenue and 6th Street) was filmed in Kemah, TX. When he takes Natalie Voss as his hostage, there is an empty grass field in the backdrop - the field is now the location of a Passport Inn.

The San Diego freeway scene (where an elevated high occupancy vehicle exit ramp is seen) was filmed on U.S. Highway 290/Northwest Freeway) heading southeast into Houston, TX. A Stop-n-Go billboard advertisement is visible - in real life, Stop-n-Go was a former convenience store chain which was purchased by Diamond Shamrock, now owned by Valero Energy Corporation.

The border crossing scene which was a stand in for the San Ysidro Port of Entry was filmed at the Hardy Toll Road North Toll Plaza a few miles south of Interstate 45 from the Montgomery County line; at the time of filming this section of the Hardy Toll Road was still under construction. On July 16, 2016 the Harris County Toll Road Authority demolished the toll booth (along with the one south of Beltway 8 adjacent to Bush Intercontinental Airport) making the entire stretch of the Hardy Toll Road electronically tolled (which includes the opening of the interchange connecting the Hardy Toll Road to the Grand Parkway Segment G, which connects Interstate 45 with Interstate 69/US 59 (Eastex Freeway). The climax of the chase when the vehicles approach the border crossing is in fact the southbound lanes of the Hardy Toll Road.

When Jackson is seen entering the I-5 Freeway, the freeway is located in a trench which does not exist in Newport Beach. The freeway entrance scene was filmed on a stretch of the Sam Houston Tollway where Harwin Drive and Westpark Road are at ground level - the filming location no longer exists after 2003 when the Harris County Toll Road Authority relocated the Sam Houston Tollway frontage roads to ground level - the location since 2004 is now the interchange of the Westpark Tollway. Right after filming wrapped, the location where the BMW enters the I-5 later had a safety barricade erected when the Harris County Sheriff's Department (and its Precinct 5 Constable division) were cracking down on illegal tollway exits and entries bypassing the toll plazas.
