Lieutenant Marin: Well, is you my friend.
Mel: Hi, Marin.
Rebecca: Well, I'm glad to see you're finally taking me seriously, Lieutenant.
Lieutenant Marin: It's very serious. Murder. And now, uh, why are you here? To see if Marin is doing duty?
Mel: Uh, no. We're just uh, looking around.
Lieutenant Marin: Look. Come here. Empty graves, missing persons, dead Popescu, this case making me crazy!
Rebecca: Have you gotten into the castle yet, Lieutenant?
Lieutenant Marin: No, no, it's no one to open gate. Now, we need rightful permission to enter.
Rebecca: Permission?
Lieutenant Marin: Yeah.

Watchable sequel but a definite step down
18 July 2009 | by (United Kingdom) – See all my reviews

After the thoroughly satisfying minor gem of a first sequel this film had some large shoes to fill. Its unfortunate therefore that this film simply isn't as good. Filemd back to back with part 2 this film bears the hallmarks of being one of those slightly neglected entries, not as well written, acted or exciting. It seems to be marking time and relies to much on the fact that by now the audience has been built and is receptive to the characters. Denice Duff and Anders Hove are good company as before, but the film tries to make Radu a more sympathetic and romantic character, pathetically in love with Michelle. The writing doesn't pull this off though and Radu seems wimpy rather than especially romantic and has somewhat lost his forceful malevolence. It seems odd that he doesn't just take Michelle first and then gain her will after forcing her but I guess that sort of thing would have been considered a step too far by the makers. Michelle of course rejects him, whilst at the same time wishing to be trained, the dynamic of their relationship is interesting but never really sparks and the jealousy of Radu's monstrous mother, played by Pamela Gordon is explored well enough either. Everyone else is good as ever, Ion Haiduc coming into his own as Marin, Kevin Blair becoming a more effective good guy and Melanie Shatner driven as ever in her quest to save Michelle. All are fun and interesting to watch, they are likable characters that keep things cooking, but sadly the majority of the film is at a moderate simmer. A mercenary friend entertainingly played by Michael Della Femina is a potentially fine addition to the roster but is unfortunately underused. The film is never dull, but it mostly doesn't have much zing until the last 20 minutes or so. At that point things get fairly exciting and the film builds to a cracking finale, but its good times still can't pull the film above the merely passable. The score is ace as ever and Ted Nicolau's direction is sound but the film really needed more energy or better writing. Fans will likely need to see this and it isn't too bad, but neither is it especially good.
