A lovely animated short
planktonrules16 December 2008
Warning: Spoilers
This animated short is from the Film Board of Canada--an organization responsible for sponsoring many artists as well as producing many Academy Award winning and nominated films in the genre. AN ARTIST is a bit different than the other films I've seen from the FBC in that instead of traditional animation, they use a rotoscope technique. This is when action is filmed and later the images are either traced over by animators or it is done by computer to produce a very lifelike and beautiful animation. When the film begins, it's obvious that this is what they did and through this technique they were also able to animate in musical notes--making them appear as if by magic.

The film is very simple--with no words at all. You just see a young girl as she's supposed to be cleaning the kitchen, but instead she gets sidetracked again and again as she realizes she can make music, or sorts, using the sounds each object makes. Unfortunately, her father doesn't recognize this at first and again and again, he directs her back to the task. By the end, however, he's come to realize her gift and lets her be herself.
