Glass Doll

For a Bollywood movie, the story of Rahul Rawail's 'Anjaam' is quite new but the film itself ends up being a messy product. The key to the mess is Rawail's miserable execution and the screenplay. Had the story only focused on Vijay and Shivani, this would have made some difference. Rawail relies too much on the Bollywood antics (which is painfully evident in the dialogues). Much of the plotpoints are also very far stretched. I mean a minister going all the way to prison to get himself a mistress! Come on! The Johnny Lever track would make you wish you were deaf. The background score is sometimes intrusive but there are certain sequences where it's minimal use is very effective. This is one of the very few things that director has succeeded in. Madhuri Dixit is quite passable as Shivani (even though she does ham it up by a notch in the emotional sequences she's good in a few key sequences). Himani Shivpuri, Kalpana Iyer and Sudha Chandran do quite well. Tinnu Anand isn't so bad himself. It is Shahrukh Khan who owns 'Anjaam'. Playing the obsessively insane lunatic isn't anything new for him but he gives his character, Vijay, an all new dimension, that is different from his characters in 'Darr', 'Don' and 'Baazigar'. 'Anjaam' had potential and under the hands of a capable director and writer, this could have been quite something.
