Television producer and director behind such popular dramas as Prime Suspect, A Touch of Frost, and, most notably, The Avengers

Don Leaver, who has died aged 86, was an award-winning television director and producer responsible for many hours of popular drama, notably as one of the key contributors to the success of the quirky adventure series The Avengers. He directed the first episode and stayed with the show as it transformed from a traditional thriller into an offbeat fantasy drama that sold worldwide and was a prime-time hit in the Us.

Having cut his teeth on the ABC crime drama Police Surgeon (1960), starring Ian Hendry, Leaver was a natural choice to migrate to its follow-up project, The Avengers, in which Hendry, now playing a different character, was joined by Patrick Macnee’s shady agent John Steed. Beautiful – The Carole King Musical has had its London run extended, and will now play in the capital’s West End until 26 November 2016.

Over 350,000 new tickets have been released for the show, which will have new cast members join the production in November. Cassidy Janson will play the title role in the musical from 30th November, while Diane Keen will appear as Genie Klein, King’s mother.  Alan Morrissey will continue as King’s husband and song-writing partner Gerry Goffin as well as Lorna Want as song-writer Cynthia Weil, Ian McIntosh as song-writer Barry Mann and Gary Trainor as music publisher and producer Don Kirshner.

UK TV Ratings: BBQ Champ serves up 2.29 million viewers on ITV

BBQ Champ served up 2.29 million viewers (12.8%) for ITV on Friday evening (July 31).

'Great British BBQ Rip Off' - here's what Twitter thought of BBQ Champ

Featuring Adam Richman, Mark Blatchford and Myleene Klass, the brand new cooking competition peaked with 2.51 million between 9-10pm.

Gino's Italian Escape: A Taste of the Sun was ITV's highest rated show outside of soaps, attracting 2.39 million (13.6%) at 8pm.

Both shows were outperformed by the returning Ripper Street on BBC One, which entertained 3.73 million (20.8%) at 9pm.

BBC One's evening began with 2.32 million (13.6%) for Animal Super Parents at 7pm, and continued with 2.95 million (15.6%) for Would I Lie to You at 8.30pm.

The night ended with 1.97 million (16.8%) for Room 101 at 10.35pm.

BBC Two's evening was dominated by the rugby league match between Leeds Rhinos and St Helens, which was seen by 1.02 million (5.7%) from 7.30pm.

Presto TV to commission local production

Subscription VoD service Presto TV will commission original Australian programming and source other content exclusively for the platform.

A joint venture between Foxtel and Seven West Media, Presto TV launched last Sunday. Subscribers pay a monthly fee of $9.99 for the TV stream, the same amount for Foxtel.s 10-months-old Presto Movies, and $14.99 for both.

Presto TV will commission original productions including drama, Seven Network director of programming Angus Ross tells If.. "We will make stuff for Presto TV," he said, without giving any specifics.

As for acquisitions, he flagged the streaming service would buy content such as .binge-worthy dramas. and more children.s programming.

Ross said, .My mantra for Seven.s primary channel is that I will buy something if I think it will rate. That.s the same in finding content we think will work for Presto TV..
