My favorite so far of the Sentai series
22 July 2017 | by See all my reviews

I know a lot of people prefer the more serious Dairanger, but I found this one more consistent and unapologetically fun.

This season tries to be more lighthearted and it works. A lot of the monsters are played to a more comical degree and they are a hoot and delightfully weird. You get to learn about Japanese Yokai from folklore too, which is interesting.

The show is also accompanied by a Japanese host. He's the most Japanocentric part of the show that might confuse Western viewers. However, I grew accustomed to him after a while and missed him after he disappeared around the halfway point.

For those who don't prefer humor, the show becomes more serious halfway through. Overall, the drama/humor balances out quite nicely.

Though the main characters aren't the most fleshed out, as is the nature of the Super Sentai shows, I felt they were memorable than both Zyuranger and Dairanger. One of the characters mostly speaks English in the beginning and it's pretty fun. Also, they drive around in a sentient cat/food truck which is as campy as it sounds.

The main villains work, but there is only one that stands out from the rest. The rocker-styled Demon Prince Junior steals the show every scene he's in but unfortunately is not utilized as much as he should be.

The monsters also have my favorite designs so far. I kind of liked the zords in this. They were experimenting with adding additional zords at this point when the concept was still new. Rather than merely adding a new zord halfway through, they add two sets of new zords throughout the series. Unfortunately, the first two groups are humanoid and too identical-looking to be interesting though I do like the final Japanese castle-based megazord. Also they're too similar looking to each other. The last animal-based ones are more interesting.

If you're interested in Sentai, I recommend this.
