The series based on the lives of a group of students who attend the fictional Hartley High School in Sydney. Praised for its willingness to tackle gritty issues, from drugs to romance to religion to shop lifting and homelessness, it has starred some names well-known to Australian television, especially Peter Sumner and Rebecca Smart, and it has bred new talent like Callan Mulvey. Heartbreak High is one of those shows that appeal to some, but not to others. Some weeks, its interesting, others, its boring like other Australian dramas.
Some of the issues raised in class are well debated. The main problem, though, is the writers decision of cutting stars out of the show, just when the audience starts to get to know them well. Ryan and Anita were the two that I thought were the best characters, but the writers decided to move them along.
Heartbreak High is adequate. Its not the type of program that makes me want to set the recorder every week, but at the same time, its entertaining enough. Rating=3/5
