Storyline

"Finney" begins with the murder of the patriarch of a criminal family, Patrick "Tucker" Finney. Who killed him? There are plenty of suspects - from his compulsive gambler and drug addict son Tom to rival "businessman" Bobo Simpson. Tucker's eldest son, Steven (or Finney, as everyone calls him) couldn't care less. As a sick joke, his father has left him a derelict cinema in the middle of Simpson territory. Finney decides to turn it into a jazz club, and finally pull his life together. Meanwhile, his older sister Lena, who has inherited both Tucker's shady empire and his hard personality, has decided to find out who murdered her father... Written by <rosie@ihug.co.nz>

A storm in Newcastle
1 August 2013 | by See all my reviews

In 1988 there was a Channel 4 funded film called Stormy Monday that starred Sting as a nightclub owner in Newcastle mixed up in a plot that involved Sean Bean, Tommy Lee Jones and Melanie Griffiths as waitress in the north east.

Finney which was made by ITV six years later is a spin off, a presumed prequel to the film, with David Morrissey taking over from Sting as Finney.

Both Morrissey and John Woodvine stand out in this series and Morrissey is certainly more memorable in the part than Sting.

Again Finney is a nightclub/Jazz club owner involved with local Newcastle gangsters, feuding families and the mystery of who killed his criminal father.

Shades of Get Carter and Gangsters with rivals who all have something to hide. However the series had a lukewarm reception and has largely been forgotten.
