'Nashville' books Ming-Na for a guest-starring role

17 December 2012 10:53 AM, PST | Zap2It - From Inside the Box | See recent Zap2It - From Inside the Box news »

There may be a bidding war over Rayna coming to "Nashville": Ming-Na has been cast as a music-label executive looking to sign the country star to a new deal.

Ming-Na will guest-star in episode 11 of the country-music series as Calista Reeves, according to a report from TVLine. Reeves is described as a successful, Los Angeles-based executive looking to lure Rayna James (Connie Britton) away from Edgehill music and Nashville.

Since the actress -- best known for her role as Dr. Jing-Mei Chen on "ER" -- is currently only scheduled for a single episode, Rayna's current record label may not need to worry too much. This of course presupposes that the buzz off the Rayna/Juliette duet, "Wrong Song," continues to help the country-music icon.

Although most recently seen in guest and recurring roles -- on "Eureka," "Two and a Half Men" and more -- Ming-Na has also been in »

Anthony Edwards on 3D 'Top Gun': 'I don't know if we necessarily need it'

17 December 2012 10:41 AM, PST | Pop2it | See recent Pop2it news »

Anthony Edwards admits to mixed feelings about "Top Gun" going back into the danger zone, this time in 3D.

Returning to series television in the ABC suspense drama "Zero Hour" starting Thursday, Feb. 14, the "ER" veteran soon will be seen again as Goose -- amiable pal and co-pilot of Tom Cruise's Maverick -- when the 1986 adventure classic gets a six-day run in IMAX theaters starting Friday, Feb. 8. The 3D version then will make its Blu-ray debut Tuesday, Feb. 19.

"I just got my pilot's license a year ago, and I love flying," Edwards tells Zap2it, "so from that point of view and how the [film's] flying sequences were done, I guess it's exciting. I don't know if we necessarily need it again, but a lot of people love that movie."

Edwards adds it doesn't surprise him that "Top Gun," directed by the late Tony Scott, is getting such treatment now: "Once you get things digitized, »

Career out of control: how Hollywood and Broadway portray professions | Emma Brockes

12 December 2012 3:02 PM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

After all the cliches – sleezy hack, crusading attorney, tart with a heart – isn't it time showbiz tackled chemical engineering?

There isn't much to recommend the Broadway revival of Glengarry Glen Ross, which, despite a stellar cast including Al Pacino and Richard Schiff, is slow, thin, dated and delusional, thinking itself naughty for the swear words (lots of "fucks"; two or three c-words), when, across the street, Book of Mormon nightly wows audiences with the suggestion that God be penetrated in every orifice.

Still. I saw Glengarry last week with someone who works in sales, which made it somewhat more interesting.

Mamet's play documents the feral end of the sales spectrum – men flogging units of Florida timeshare – and is faithful enough to reality to provoke a complicated reaction from those who work somewhere in it: from recognition – "always be closing", the play's mantra, is "something every sales person lives by," said my friend – to dismay, »
