Blue Heelers (TV Series 1994–2006) Poster

John Wood's (Tom Croydon) favorite line from all 500 episodes of the series is "You shot Doherty's dog?", shouted by him to Constables Maggie Doyle and Wayne Patterson in the pilot episode.
Before her death in a car accident in season two, Tom's first wife Nell Croydon was mentioned in almost every episode but was never seen. In the episode of her death, her voice is heard and we see her left eye briefly in a photograph Tom touches before her funeral. Behind the scenes, John Wood who plays Tom thought the idea of Nell being talked of but never seen was hilarious, and called her "non-existant Nell". The episode of her death was rated one of the saddest moments in Australian television.
Before filming started on the pilot episode, Ann Burbrook was cast as Maggie Doyle and Lisa McCune as Roz Patterson. The two actresses swapped roles to avoid being typecast in the future.
William McInnes and Martin Sacks were originally set to play characters called Nick Hasham and PJ Schultz, but shortly before production commenced, their surnames were swapped (to Nick Schultz and PJ Hasham) as it was felt they better suited the characters.
John Wood is the only cast member to have appeared in every single episode of the series, even though fellow original cast member Julie Nihill is also still with the show.
In the DVD audio commentary of season two, released in November 2005, John Wood and line producer David Clarke mention that Damian Walshe-Howling, who played Constable Adam Cooper from 1995-1998, was set to reprise his role in 2006. He came back to the show in the very last episode.
The cancellation of the show in January 2006 made front-page headline news on nearly all of Australia's major daily newspapers, including "The Sydney Morning Herald" and Sydney's "The Daily Telegraph", Melbourne's "The Herald Sun" and "The Age", and Brisbane's "The Courier Mail".
In one episode in season seven, a "Welcome to Mt. Thomas" sign is seen, and gives the town's population as approximately 6400. Undoubtedly this increased as the series went on. It was also shown through the earlier seasons that Mt. Thomas had both Coles and Safeway supermarkets.
The same blue heeler dog was used as Tom Croydon's dog Digger throughout the entire series. In reality its name was Bluey, and lasted in the show from 1994-2005.
Four of the actors who later got recurring roles as police officers first appeared in the series in one-off guest spots as civilians. Peta Doodson, who became Insp Monica Draper, appeared as the wife of a council alderman, Tasma Walton, who became Const Dash McKinley, appeared as a 16-year-old schoolgirl, Terry Serio, who became Sgt Mick Doyle, appeared as a club bouncer and Jane Allsop, who became Const Jo Parrish appeared as a girl involved in a matchmaking scam.
