Vigorously barmy HK action fantasy adventure
11 July 2009 | by (United Kingdom) – See all my reviews

I must have seen this film three or four times by now and even with repeat viewings its hard to keep up with the plotting. There's an in depth set up involving rival clans and a legendary sword, then the matter of Jet Li's parents dying from injustice and his character suffering the deadly "Jinxes Palm" himself. Certainly this is a film where the viewer needs to pay close attention, and quick reading skills as well as the ability to cut through grammatical mishaps are pretty much vital for the subtitles. Provided one can just about keep pace with the story though, this is greatly entertaining stuff. The infamous Wong Jing directs, so as one might expect the film is highly energetic, with a good variety of craziness going on, not just the conventional flying wirework assisted sword fighting but much use of magical powers and a large cast of many varied characters including a vampire and a half man half boulder who hold the knowledge of one of the mightiest of all stances. Jings imagination shines throughout, and there isn't too much of his trademark lame humour, just a few moments that don't really work. The cast is pretty darn fine, with the aforementioned mighty Jet Li, but also Sammo Hung, Leung Ka Yan and a humorous turn from Richard Ng. Also, in keeping with Wong Jings fondness for beautiful women there are luminous turns from Chingmy Yau and a villainous Sharla Cheung. The choreography is never less than fast and frenetic, plus its imaginative and kooky stuff, maintaining a good level of visual coherence with even a welcome dash of bloodshed at times in the fighting. There are fun visual effects too, good costumes and a well sustained sense of crackers fantasy. Its a bit of a shame that there is very little traditional fighting, given the talents involved with the film, which is one of the few issues, though the level of fun is such that this isn't too regretable. More of a problem is that the galloping pace of the film threatens to constantly outrun the viewer, its a breathless experience and even with the best concentration and will in the world its a tough task to follow this film completely from beginning to end. The over speedy pacing with its constant feed of twists or action is also to the detriment of characters, there isn't much depth to anyone and feeling is a little bit squeezed out of the film. Sadly the proposed trilogy that this film was intended to start never emerged, so the story of this film isn't tied up at the end and cinematically likely never will be, so there are loose ends dotted about, though there is still a good final fight. Altogether this film is pretty awesome viewing, well worth a watch for fans of Hong Kong action fantasy. Just don't expect a perfect story, traditional fighting or much character depth and the wondrous exuberant nuttiness is sure to entertain greatly.
