Doesn't live up to it's potential, but a pleasant little movie
16 May 2011 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

The thing about adapting a book to film is that rarely does it do the book justice. It's unavoidable when doing it for the big screen since most novels are at least a few hundred pages long. This is when a mini-series can sometimes be a better way of carrying this out. Based on the book "Graced Land" by Laura Kalpakian, the film version is a 90 minute made for TV movie that doesn't exactly set the world on fire. However, it has enough of the goods to be an enjoyable experience especially for fans of Elvis and Roseanne.

Pros: Most of the performances are solid. A good story. Nice score and soundtrack full of songs by the King. Shot in Ottumwa,Iowa probably in the summer, the scenery is beautiful. Moves at a good pace. Made with a lot of heart.

Cons: Tom Arnold does fine with comedy, but here he couldn't act his way out of a paper bag. Some subplots could have used more fleshing out. Perhaps too talky and too little action.

Final thoughts: Nothing to get really excited over, but 'The Woman Who Loved Elvis' is a sweet movie that can liven up a dull afternoon. It's a slice of life kind of movie, which is always nice to see. It's also interesting due to it's starring of Roseanne and Tom Arnold before their relationship hit the skids. A movie to put a smile on your face.

My rating: 3/5
