One of the greatest (and versatile) actors actors today is receiving a much-deserved retrospective. Focus Features is hosting a three-night series honoring the work of Gary Oldman with screenings of The Contender, Dracula, JFK, Prick Up Your Ears, and Sid and Nancy, culminating in a showing of this year’s Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. The Tinker Tailor screening will be followed by a live Q&A with the actor, hosted by Kcrw’s Matt Holzman. Oldman’s a great talent and I’m immensely jealous of those able to attend. I'd love to see what Oldman has to say not only about his work in Sid and Nancy and JFK, but other films like The Fifth Element and True Romance. The first screening will be held on Monday, January 9th at the ArcLight Hollywood, with the other screenings set to follow on Tuesday and Wednesday. Tickets are free, but you must RSVP through OldmanRSVP. »

Gary Oldman gave a subdued but memorable performance in "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy." He may not have gotten love from the Golden Globe folks nor the Screen Actors Guild, but he's being honored at the upcoming Palm Springs International Film Festival where he is set to receive the International Star Award. The International Star Award recognizes an actor or actress who has achieved both critical and commercial international recognition throughout their body of work. The Awards Gala will be Saturday, January 7 at the Palm Springs Convention Center, yup, my hood!
I will be posting my interview with Oldman for "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy" very soon, hang tight! For now, here's the full press release:

Still waters run deep. That's the secret behind John LeCarre's master British spy George Smiley as played by Gary Oldman in "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy." The role marks a sharp turn from wild and crazy character actor ("Dracula," "The Professional," "Air Force One," "Immortal Beloved," "Sid & Nancy" "True Romance") to heroic leading man. "It's a lovely change of pace," Oldman says. When he arrived at the "Tinker Tailor soldier Spy" set he'd ask, "Am I sitting down in this scene?" Tom Sizemore was on a roll in the '90s in films like 'Heat,' 'True Romance,' and 'Saving Private Ryan,' but a cocaine and heroin addiction derailed his promising career. Now, the actor will tell the story of his rocky road with drugs in a new memoir, due out in 2013. "I should have been dead many times over," Sizemore said. "The fact that I'm now sober over two years -- and that I'm acting as much as I did before -- proves that people can overcome obstacles even when they're sure they can't. I hope that this book can inspire other people to never give up."

Chicago – Gary Oldman is a living legend. He’s just as fascinating in person as one would hope after seeing him dominate his craft in films like “Sid and Nancy,” “JFK,” “The Professional,” “True Romance,” “The Fifth Element,” “Hannibal,” “Harry Potter,” “The Dark Knight,” and much more. With topics varying from his desire to play more restrained roles at this point in his career to Al Pacino’s typecasting to why he considers himself like Mr. Potato Head, the only regret one would have after speaking to Mr. Oldman is that it can’t happen every week.
Arguably his career-best performance lands on Friday in Chicago when Oldman brings “Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy” to the big screen. In the film, he plays George Smiley, a retired British agent brought back in when it’s learned that there may be a mole at the highest levels of his former organization. Oldman sat down with HollywoodChicago. »

Exclusive: Tom Sizemore, who went from the intense star of films like Heat and Saving Private Ryan to a cocaine and heroin addict whose addiction struggles and subsequent recovery played out on reality TV, has signed a memoir deal with Atria Books. He’ll write the book with Anna David and the pub date is 2013. The book will detail his rise from tough childhood in a Detroit housing project to his climb to the top in Hollywood and his eventual dark descent into drug addiction and back. Sizemore, who once romanced Elizabeth Hurley and Sharon Stone and whose performances in films from True Romance to Black Hawk Down elevated him from character actor to the star of his own TV series in Robbery Homicide Division, lost it all due to his substance-abuse struggles. It’s one thing when we’re talking about Alfred Hitchcock having a walk-through in every single one of his films, including one that exclusively takes place on a lifeboat (he appears in a newspaper ad for that one). Sure it’s eccentric but it’s not surprising because, well, they’re his films and he can appear in them as he pleases. What does strike me as weird is when a director shows up totally unexpected in someone else’s film. Usually there is a good reason – either they are producing the film or friends with the cast. However despite the later explanation, it’s still a bit jarring to see, say… the director of Kill Bill in an Adam Sandler comedy… 7. The movie that made Tom Cruise the superstar he is today, Top Gun, has recently been talked up for a potential sequel. Both powerhouse producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Tony Scott have expressed a desire to once again take to the skies. Cruise, in an interview with MTV while promoting Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, has finally spoken on where he stands and whether his current writer/director on One Shot will still be involved:-
I don’t think Chris [McQuarrie] is going to write it, Chris is directing ‘One Shot’ right now, which I’m acting. We’ve got to go back in January and finish it.
I said to Tony I want to make another movie with him. He and I haven’t made a film since ‘Days of Thunder,’ Tony and I and Jerry, we never thought that we would do it again. Then they started to come to »

Although his strike rate is far from flawless (Pelham? Domino? Days of Thunder?) Tony Scott has some solid gold in his back catalogue as well – Man on Fire, Crimson Tide, Top Gun, True Romance – and is very rarely wholly off his game. It is therefore always good news to hear that he has something else in the pipeline, especially since he is returning to the milieu of what could be argued is his previous high water-mark – the afore-mentioned Crimson Tide.
Yes, it’s submersibles again for Tony Scott. Although plot details are hard to come by, the title Narco Sub refers to submersible vessels used by Latin American drug traffickers to get their wares into the Us and the suggestion is that tonally the film is reminiscent of Tide and Man on Fire. Frankly, anything even vaguely up those streets will be something to treasure. Fox are producing this one, »

Gary Oldman recently admitted that he's "waited 30 years to play" a character like semi-retired British intelligence agent George Smiley in the upcoming thriller Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, which may have come as a surprise to those that have enjoyed his other, more frenetic, roles. "It's a different animal to, say, Sirius Black [in the Harry Potter movies]," Oldman told The Playlist after his career tribute at the Gotham Awards. "Or even Drexl in True Romance, which was a kind of fairy tale. I hope I wasn't over-the-top as Lee Harvey Oswald [in JFK]! But it's been a long time since I've played someone like that, and Smiley's the one to do it with."
Based on the 1974 novel by John le Carré, Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy is already a success in Britain, where it opened at the top of the box office in the U.K. in September. Director Tomas Alfredson (Let the Right One In) and screenwriter »

Hollywoodnews.com: Gary Oldman, appearing on Sirius/Xm’s “The Opie and Anthony Show,” contemplated a question he likely has been asked before: “What was your favorite character?” Yet how does one choose from a body of work that spans decades and includes iconic characters that range from Sid Vicious to Lee Harvey Oswald, from Dracula to Sirius Black.
Oldman, being a good sport, talked about staying in character as Oswald or wanting to make a splash in the brief amount of screen time allotted for “True Romance.” But he confessed that his most recent turn as heady spy George Smiley in Tomas Alfredson’s adaptation of John le Carre’s “Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy” ranks as one of his all-time favorites.
And why not? It’s a stirring, forceful performance that’s showy in its restraint, and the less Oldman does with the chameleonic character, »

Calm down. This isn't a scandalous tabloid article about Tony Scott's flagging career and prodigious drug abuse. This is a rather predictable article about one of Scott's upcoming film projects.
The movie in question is titled Narco Sub, about the semi-submersibles used to smuggle cocaine by South American drug cartels. It's being compared by other sites to past Tony Scott flicks like Crimson Tide and True Romance, but that's only because those movies involve submarines and coke, respectively…ohhh. I see it now.
Since the Internet is randomly comparing past Scott projects to this new one without any real idea about the details of Narco Sub, I'm going to go out on a limb and posit that this new flick is actually a mixture of Top Gun and The Hunger because, really, who doesn't wanna see that? There's no need for Bolivian drug dealers in rickety submarines when you »
