It almost failed
7 April 2014 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

I first saw this made for TV movie on a DVD picked up from a public library. I have saw it three times since and I always have the same desire to see the old man succeed.

Like Ice Dreams, Edge of the Garden, and the other movie about a man and a lady interacting across time (she lived during the Civil War) they are movies I can always enjoy but almost never completely. Another movie in this same genre that succeeds completely is Driving Miss Daisy, also starring Jessica Tandy and Morgan Freeman. That one did not repeat the mistakes here.

So why did I downgrade it? It wasn't Hume Cronyn whose first magnificent performance I saw was in "People Will Talk" as Prof. Rodney Elwell. His performance there was superb. It is even better here. He made it believable.

It is this penchant of Hollywood directors and producers to make fighting that doesn't flow naturally out of the action. It makes me wonder what is wrong with directors. It always has to be ham handed and over the top. Watch the master who directed "The Trouble With Harry" to see how to do it correctly. Even worse the directors have to make it as stupid as possible. The other family members are never allowed to see the dog? Try it the right way some time directors and watch what happens. Directors, also don't assume people are as stupid as you are. Just as a natural course of action the family members should have saw the white dog even as a phantasm, and much sooner rather than later. Did the white dog really exist? Potential viewers you will have to find that out for yourself.

It is Hume Cronyn's performance that pulled this movie out of the fire. Maybe like me he has had a Near Death Experience. If he had, he would know that the only thing that endures is friendship and love. This movie had it despite the director's best effort to kill it. If they got it right I would have given the movie a ten. I did give Driving Miss Dasiy a Ten.
