Trivia

On the first day of filming, River Phoenix showed up high and blew several takes. As he attempted to hit his mark, he stumbled and almost fell, mumbling his lines into the ground, and not making eye contact with the other actors. Phoenix claimed to director Peter Bogdanovich that he had only taken a pain pill and one beer, and that he was mostly depressed over the recent breakup with girlfriend Suzanne Solgot. Bogdanovich would later minimize Phoenix's troubles that night and insisted that he didn't cause another problem for the rest of production. See more »

Miranda Presley: [sitting in the truck] Okay, come on. Lets go.
James Wright: We can't just leave, we've gotta at least let them know we've changed our mind... the preachers on his way and it's raining...
Miranda Presley: No, no, no, no. Look, uh, we'll just... We'll have a fight, and i'll pretend to slap you... or shoot you in the leg or something...
James Wright: ...Got a better idea.
Miranda Presley: ...What?
James Wright: Let's... get married.
Miranda Presley: You don't just get married as a joke.
James Wright: It's not a joke. It's a journey.

country music and "hipness" blend together in a great film
24 June 2000 | by (FL) – See all my reviews

I rented this movie last summer after having never even heard of it, I just picked it up because it had River Phoenix in it and he was, of course, quite the hottie :) Anyway, I've never been into country music but I LOVED this film! It deals with that whole scene and has great songs in it-- especially the one that Samantha Mathis' character writes and sings at the end. Plus the movie has one of Sandra Bullock's early performances, which is great. And yes, River also does his part to make the film very watchable! If you haven't watched The Thing Called Love, go pick it up-- you'll be pleasantly surprised.
