Julianna Margulies Uses iPad App To Remember Her Lines

1 June 2012 1:11 AM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Former E.R. star Julianna Margulies has Tom Hanks' actress wife Rita Wilson to thank for helping her master her lines - she turned her on to an amazing new memory tool online.

Margulies reveals she asked Wilson for help when she found herself struggling to remember dialogue for her hit drama The Good Wife - and the Sleepless in Seattle star suggested she try a new cellphone application, called Rehearsal 2.

The actress tells The Hollywood Reporter, "It's on the iPad. You highlight your lines with your fingers.

"I shoot 23 episodes a year, and it's all legal dialogue. It's so inhuman what they (writers) want you to do. Rita Wilson, who was a guest on our show, saw me... just sweating bullets all the time. She's like, 'Honey, Rehearsal 2'. And it's changed my life!" »

Dana Schutz: Piano in the Rain Friedrich Petzel Gallery Through June 16, 2012

The sitcom, or situation comedy, is a television show format that usually features a family scenario (for example, a husband and wife, like in The Honeymooners), or a larger, extended family (The Cosby Show), or some kind of surrogate family (Barney Miller, Cheers). In this weekly formula a mini-crisis or drama ensues, threatening to unravel the delicate fabric of the familial tranquility. Historically, theatrical comedies have often dealt with the concerns of human activities and conditions in ways that drama can't, cloaking tragedy with humor. Shakespeare, for example, often used his comedies to deal with subject matter that might have been problematic to present as drama; the entirety of Restoration theatre was based on the use of satire as a form of social and political critique.

Dana Schutz appropriates the familiar forms and styles of Munch, Ensor, and Guston, »

A Classic Movie Fan's Dream: 2012 Summer Film Classics at the Paramount

15 May 2012 11:30 AM, PDT | Slackerwood | See recent Slackerwood news »

One of the best things about living in Austin is getting to attend some of the classic films that screen each summer at the Paramount Theatre. The full Paramount Summer Classic Film Series schedule has just been released, with movies screening at Stateside this year, too.

Here are some from the bunch I find worth noting:

Pillow Talk (1959), pictured above, helps start the summer series off -- screening with the far more serious To Kill a Mockingbird. Although I've been a fan of classic movies since elementary school, it is only in recent years that my love and admiration for Doris Day has grown. This comedy, featuring Day as an interior designer forced to share a party line with playboy Rock Hudson, is now one of my favorite movies, and I can't wait to see it on the big screen! There's a new girl coming to Broadway. Lynn personally introduced Deschanel Thursday night on the stage of Nashville's historic Ryman Auditorium during Opry Country Classics. The two then sang "Coal Miner's Daughter." "It's a long way from Butcher Holler to Broadway in New York City. From Studs To Schlubs? The Evolution Of Male Rom-Com Leads

27 April 2012 12:55 PM, PDT | Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news »

In "The Five-Year Engagement" (out now), Jason Segel goes from being a successful and put-together chef in San Francisco to a burly, dirty bunny suit-wearing woodsman in Ann Arbor, Mich. and back again. It's an arc that seems perfectly suited for these times. After all, since Richard Gere wooed Julia Roberts' hooker-with-a-heart-of-gold while wearing a bespoke suit in "Pretty Woman," the male leads in romantic comedies have become decidedly more schlubby.

To investigate this trend, HuffPost Entertainment decided to look at the 24 highest-grossing romantic comedies of all time, to see whether featuring an Average Joe (or perhaps worse; see: the dirty bunny suit) helps or hurts a film's box-office potential. (Spoiler: it's mostly split.)

Check out the evolution of male rom-com leads below, with the HuffPost Entertainment-patented Schlub-o-Meter giving schlub ratings to all 24 leading men.

Broadway To Continue Grabbing Hits From Hollywood

16 April 2012 11:52 AM, PDT | Studio Briefing - Film News | See recent Studio Briefing - Film News news »

Although in the past a hit Broadway show almost inevitably led to a hit Hollywood movie, the reverse process is increasingly occurring these days, the New York Post observed on Sunday as it laid out a long list of movies that are being developed for Broadway or that have already made the schedule for fall debuts. The newspaper quoted Broadway producer Manny Azenberg as saying, “A hit film is a brand, and it gives you that recognition factor.” Ken Davenport, a producer who is currently preparing to mount the 1980 Christopher Reeve time-traveler Somewhere in Time on the Great White Way, dismisses criticism that such shows lack the creative innovation that is expected of a Broadway show that people often pay hundreds of dollars to see. He told the Post: “Totally original musicals that aren’t based on anything are unbelievably rare, and have a big failure rate. I look for source material that will make a great musical, and I don’t care if it’s from a book, a movie or a postcard!” Among the movies in the process of being transformed into stage productions are: Animal House, Back to the Future, Big Fish, Bullets over Broadway, Flashdance, and Sleepless in Seattle. »

Hanks has yet to commit to the production, which will be directed by Mike Nichols, but if he signs on it will be his first Broadway role since 1979.

As reported previously on BroadwayWorld.com, Hugh Jackman played McAlary during a reading in New York two years ago.

Hanks has also reportedly signed on to play movie icon Walt Disney in a new film about the filmmaker's 20-year battle to secure the rights to make Mary Poppins from author P.L. Travers. »
