Great, funny romp
9 February 2010 | by (Gainesville, Virginia) – See all my reviews

What a fun film! When I bought the DVD I was thinking it would be a fairly run-of-the-mill Hong Kong fantasy film. (Well, truth be told, I bought it because Maggie Cheung is in it figuring how could I go wrong?) But I was totally unprepared for just how funny this movie is! It was primarily a farce; I imagine the cast must have had a blast making this.

You can read the synopsis from the DVD case but that won't really tell you anything because the English translation is undecipherable. But the gist of it is there are two bounty hunters (guys): "Flying Dagger" and "Little Dagger." But whenever they are about to capture the criminal, their two female rivals ("Big Bewitchment" and "Little Bewitchment") come in to foil their success.

Eventually, the Daggers are hired on to pursue #1 thief "Nine Tails Fox" and his wife "Flying Cat." They eventually have to join forces with the Bewitchment ladies -- rivalries and romance follows.

Well, that's enough plot. All sorts of hi-jinx ensue. Let's see, we've got:

--Maggie Cheung (as "Flying Cat") doing cat-fu. Leaping through the air all hisses and phhhts and rrrrowwws, and claws-a-scratchin'.

--Nine Tails Fox employing the latest in martial-farts action.

--An innkeeper whose wife has been doused with "nine times lust powder." Now this innkeeper (played by the always great Man Tat Ng) would just as soon avoid "one time lust" with his wife if he can help it, so you can see the trouble he faces with "nine times." (In fact, this whole husband-wife interplay is right out of the Al and Peg battles of "Married with Children".)

--A disembodied hand (chopped off of a martial arts master called "Never Die") that shows up throughout the film to, uh, lend a hand (think "Thing" from the Addams Family).

All this set in the flying through the air, spinning, whooshing, swordplay, wire-fu, billowing tapestry martial arts fantasy. The farcical humor is on target, the women are extremely easy on the eyes, everyone is having fun, and, as a viewer, I guarantee your share of outright belly-laughs. I will watch this again and again.
