Trivia

The tapestries in Mary's room comprise a cycle known as "The Hunt for the Unicorn". In this cycle, the unicorn is lured from the wild and into a new life by a young virgin, foreshadowing Mary's role in the story. See more »

Goofs

If Colin had really spent his entire life in his bed and had never walked, his muscles would have been severely atrophied, and it would require years of therapy to rebuild them. He definitely would not have been able to walk as well as he does at the end of the movie if he had just started walking, at most, two months before. See more »

Quotes

[first lines]
Mary: My name is Mary Lennox. I was born in India. It was hot, and strange, and lonely in India. I didn't like it. Nobody by my servant, my ayah, looked after me. My parents didn't want me. My mother cared only to go to parties. And my father was busy with his military duties. I was never allowed to go to the parties. I watched them from my mother's bedroom window. I was angry, but I never cried. I didn't know how to cry.

Absolutely marvelous!
19 December 1999 | by (Washington) – See all my reviews

This version of TSG is probably the best ever made. The film is so lovingly directed by Holland, I've been told that this story was one of her favorites growing up.

Heading a wonderful all-star cast is Kate Maberly as Mary Lennox. Maberly carried her character beautifully, she didn't appear to be acting as much as actually getting into character. Her attitude and personality changed as things got better in life. Maggie Smith, one of my personal favorite actressess, is wonderful as Mrs. Medlock. Others like John Lynch and Andrew Knott add more magic to the production.

Hayden Prowse was wonderful as Colin Craven. Surprisingly enough, this is the only movie he's ever been in. I certainly wish he acted more often for he has good talent.
