Derek Jeter remained as cool and collected as his play at shortstop over the past two decades when the New York Yankees honored their retiring captain Sunday with a 45-minute ceremony that included appearances by NBA great Michael Jordan and baseball ironman Cal Ripken Jr. Jeter thanked people a dozen times as he spoke to a capacity crowd at Yankee Stadium for about 3 minutes before Sunday's game against Kansas City. "It's kind of hard to believe that 20 seasons has gone by so quickly," the 40-year-old said. "You guys have all watched me grow up over the last 20 years. I've watched you, »

Box Office Democracy: “Earth to Echo”

10 July 2014 2:00 PM, PDT | Comicmix.com | See recent Comicmix news »

If my eight year-old self had seen Earth to Echo this weekend he would have loved it.  It’s vaguely science-fiction-y and soft sci-fi was my jam back then.  It features clever resourceful kids and clueless adults and what kid doesn’t like to think themselves cleverer than their oppressors?  Earth to Echo also has a good pace to it, it goes quickly from action piece to action piece with very little fluff holding it down.  Unfortunately I had to see this movie as my 30 year-old self and so I enjoyed it a bit less but I would probably recommend it to my non-existent friends with kids in this age group who absolutely had to take their kids to a movie in a theater.

It feels like Earth to Echo can’t keep track of all of its characters and that’s saying something when they only have four characters to focus on. »

Biblical Epics seem to be in this year…what cinematic trend could be up next?

6 March 2014 9:07 AM, PST | Hollywoodnews.com | See recent Hollywoodnews.com news »

Every single year we seem to get some sort of trend in the movies. Sometimes it’s Oscar themed (remember how many 2013 prestige releases were about survival of some sort?), while sometimes it’s a specific sort of a disaster movie, or even a particular type of genre outing, like how the apocalypse has been in of late. 2014 looks to be the year that the Biblical Epic returns to the screen, with both Darren Aronofsky’s Noah and Ridley Scott’s Exodus looking for awards attention (and just this past weekend Son of God opened, though that’s basically just an expansion of that TV series The Bible, so it’s hardly an epic in my eyes). That got me thinking about what other trend could be next… Personally, I never mind if we get two astroid movies in one year or something like that, as long as they each offer something different. »

Review: 'Girls' - 'Flo'

2 March 2014 7:30 PM, PST | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

A review of tonight's "Girls" coming up just as soon as Chachi means what I think it means... "Girls" is about Hannah Horvath's adventures as a woman in her early-mid 20s, and all the exciting and terrifying things that go along with that time of your life. But just because she's on her own, living with her boyfriend, hanging out with her friends, working at a job and (mostly) doing what she wants, she still has roots, still has a family she's tied up in, and one of the smartest things "Girls" has done — and done consistently — is to remind us of where Hannah came from and how that shaped her. The show has done fairly well with family in general — we've also met Marnie's mom, Jessa's dad and Adam's sister — and this year got some good mileage out of Gaby Hoffmann as Adam's sister, but this is Hannah's show, »

Pre-credit sequence. The division of tribes has been made by the quality the players most rely upon in life, whatever that means. The Brains Tribe has an average Iq of 130 which is, honestly, not all that impressive. I mean, they're smart, but they're not Geena Davis smart. Spencer tied for first in the World Open Chess Championship and says he's both diabolical and a genius. If you say so! David is the President of the Marlins, which means that if there's a challenge that requires salary dumping, he's going to be hard to top. Kass is a lawyer who boasts about being undefeated, which is the kind of thing John Grisham characters boast about, that and smart older secretaries who have forgotten more law than most of us will ever know. Nascar Revs Up for New Season at the Daytona 500

Nascar is all abuzz with what's new, from yet another revised points system — meant to give the final race of the season more of a "playoffs" feel — to the return to competition of Dale Earnhardt's No. 3 car (driven by Rookie of the Year candidate Austin Dillon). But even as the Daytona 500 kicks off a fresh season on Sunday, teams still have to contend with the same old leader — the sport's formidable six-time and defending champion: "The road to the Sprint Cup championship any year goes through Jimmie Johnson," says Fox Nascar commentator Mike Joy. "That's who you have to beat."

Justin Lin to Adapt Documentary About Ragtag Baseball Team

24 January 2014 2:45 PM, PST | Vulture | See recent Vulture news »

The Hollywood Reporter reports that Justin Lin has acquired the remake rights to the documentary The Battered Bastards of Baseball, which premiered at Sundance earlier this week. The doc tells the story of actor Bing Russell in 1973 creating the Portland Mavericks, a professional baseball team that was not affiliated with any major-league organization. The result was a real motley crew of a team. (EW has a story about how crazy it was.) It included Bing's son, Kurt Russell (yes, that Kurt Russell), who played and served as VP. Todd Field (In the Bedroom, Little Children) is in talks to write and direct, which is especially fun because Field was the team's batboy. When the story is rewritten to be about how the batboy — after a fluke arm injury — becomes the star pitcher and leads the ragtag group unexpectedly to the World Series – Rookie of the Year style, »

NBA: 5 Teams Who Could Derail The Miami Heat Three-Peat

After eight seasons in the NBA, LeBron James had cemented himself as one of the best players in the league. However, one achievement had still eluded him for his entire career: An NBA Championship ring. Despite assembling the “Big 3″ of LeBron, Dwyane Wade, and Chris Bosh in 2011, the Miami Heat fell short of a championship after losing to the Dallas Mavericks in six games in the NBA Finals.

Two years have passed since then and the Heat have not one, but two championship banners hanging in the rafters of American Airlines Arena. Behind the stellar play of James and the rest of the Big 3, Miami has become the annual favorite to run the table and win the championship. The road to a third championship only gets tougher from here on out, with these five teams standing »

Jay Gruden Replaces Mike Shanahan As Washington Redskins Coach

Jay Gruden, who spent last season as the offensive coordinator for the Cincinatti Bengals, will take over the head coaching position for the Washington Redskins.

Jay Gruden Gets Washington Redskins Job

By taking the job, Gruden has become the eighth Redskins coach during the 15 years that Dan Snyder has served as the franchise’s owner. Their last coach, Mike Shanahan, picked up 40 losses over his four years at the helm, finishing the 2011 season with a 3-13 record. Gruden acknowledged that he’ll have his hands full with the team that finished dead last in the Nfc East.

“There’s a lot of work to do,” Gruden said. “When you’re 3-13, there’s not one particular player or reason. There’s a lot of reasons and a lot of things that need to be fixed, no question.”

WWE in 2013 – Looking Back: A Year in Review

1 January 2014 1:43 PM, PST | Blogomatic3000 | See recent Blogomatic3000 news »

To begin, I will say that I have gone through many emotions as a wrestling fan in 2013, from elation to despair and everywhere in between. So is the life of wrestling fandom.

In the opening portion of 2013 we had Cm Punk as the WWE Champion, reaching the end of his lengthy reign that allowed him to announce himself as the “longest reigning WWE champion in the past 25 years”. He lost that belt, in the January, to the “returning for a tickle and a handshake” The Rock. Many fans were upset to see Punk lose so easily to the returning “great one” who had bulked up so much that the athleticism he showed throughout his full-time wrestling career had all but disappeared. The Rock then went on to have two more matches before leaving WWE again to focus on his flourishing movie career. Punk, following a failed attempt at a rematch »
