The Chicago Cubs are World Series Champions! Let that soak in ... most of your grandparents, and everyone on Earth younger than them, Never could.   No sign of the apocalypse, so far. However, 59-year-old actor Daniel Stern did tearfully recreate his Cubs celebration from "Rookie of the Year" -- in his underwear. Close to apocalyptic, but mostly good fun. #CurseKiller And if you've been living under a rock and don't know what the 'Billy Goat Curse' is -- ask Bill Murray. »

There are a string of baseball movies that I grew up with; The Sandlot, Little Big League, Angels In The Outfield. The list goes on, but also includes Rookie Of The Year. Directed by Daniel Stern himself (of Home Alone fame), the movie also featured Stern in a role as a pitching coach for the Chicago Cubs. Well, wouldn't you know it? Daniel Stern Revives His ‘Rookie of the Year’ Character in Support of the Cubs’ World Series Bid

26 October 2016 3:00 PM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Having fulfilled the role of lovable losers for decades now, the Chicago Cubs have a lot of goodwill in their first World Series appearance since 1945. (They also have a one-game deficit to overcome, but let’s try not to think about that.) Among their celebrity fans is Daniel Stern, whom you might recognize as Phil Brickman from “Rookie of the Year” — a standout from the mid-’90s halcyon days of kids’ sports movies (see also: “Little Big League,” “Air Bud,” “Little Giants,” “The Big Green”) that he also directed.

Great Job, Internet!: The Cubs take on the Indians in this World Series movie mashup

26 October 2016 11:00 AM, PDT | avclub.com | See recent The AV Club news »

The 2016 World Series began last night, and the participants were two of baseball’s most notoriously hard-luck franchises: the Chicago Cubs and the Cleveland Indians, neither of which has actually won it all in decades. A Cubs-Indians series sounds like a fantasy scenario from Hollywood, which may have been the inspiration for “Movie World Series 2016,” a clever movie mashup by Ross Taylor. Largely culling clips from two lighthearted comedies, David S. Ward’s Major League from 1989 and Daniel Stern’s Rookie Of The Year from 1993, Taylor has managed to piece together a pretty convincing game between these two continually thwarted teams. At heart, this is a pitcher’s duel featuring two of the game’s most eccentric hurlers. On the mound for the Cubs is Henry Rowengartner (Thomas Ian Nicholas), a 12-year-old with an arm like a cannon. Pitching for the Tribe is Ricky “Wild Thing »

Fox throws the viewers a curveball with 'Pitch'

31 August 2016 1:03 PM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Clip It: Each day, Jon Davis looks at the world of trailers, featurettes, and clips and puts it all in perspective. What would it take for a woman to become a Major League player? What I enjoyed about this Pitch trailer is its all presented in a realistic way. Ginny Baker (Kylie Bunbury) doesn't have magical powers like move Rookie of the Year, in which a kid gets in an accident and is blessed with a strong arm that lands him a job with the Cubs. Ginny's father breaks it down when she's a young girl. She might be a great pitcher but biologically speaking, she's not going to have a fastball that will work in the Mlb. So she's going to need a "secret weapon:" the screwball. A screwball is a pitch designed to break in the opposite direction of a curveball or curveball. Which means that a batter's eyes will get tricked, »
