Storyline

Things are not going well in the depression-era town of Castle Gate. Mr. Ribaldi, a mysterious rich man with a disfigured face and an abrasive personality, has just bought and moved into a long-vacant mansion. Bonnie, an adolescent girl who loves to sing, ends up working for Ribaldi so that her family can stay in their house. But Ribaldi is quite an accomplished musician himself, and he is soon giving Bonnie voice lessons. Meanwhile, local businesses are being shut down by foreclosures, and the townspeople suspect Ribaldi is responsible. Written by Joe McCauley <mccauley_je@lfs.loral.com>

Quotes

Bonnie Nelson: [after her singing lesson] Well, how was it?
Hans: Excellent!
[Ribaldi lunges a songbook at him and it hits Hans in the head]
Hans: Why, I never!
Ribaldi/Rigoletto: No, you should never. NEVER!
[Hans stands up and leaves]
Bonnie Nelson: You shouldn't be so rude to Hans.
Ribaldi/Rigoletto: Perhaps, but this is not the point. The point is you are not allowing the sound to abstract. The tip of the tongue should be drawn towards the top of the lower teeth. So it cannot produce backtrapping of the vocal cords.

Charming Movie
13 December 2004 | by (Houghton, NY) – See all my reviews

I adore this movie. It is a very good movie with great music. I have watched it so much my tape needs to be replaced. I found the plot charming when I was younger and the songs delightful. When I began voice lessons the songs from this movie were some of the first I learned. Rigoletto is a little-known fairytale that comes to life in this movie. It has some humor mixed in through Hans the butler and the pig farmer who is very protective of his pigs and claims they are people too. There is a bit of violence, but it is not shown that much and is necessary for the movie. The lesson, that everyone should look inside themselves for that "hidden melody" and that getting the whole story instead of jumping to conclusions and making a rash action, is much needed today. I would definitely recommend seeing it and sharing it with the children and adults in your life.
