Former West Wing cast members gathered in Austin at the Atx TV Festival on June 11 to mark the 10-year anniversary of the show's finale, but discussing efforts to help veterans returning from war was the real message. The reunited cast, which included Bradley Whitford, Janel Moloney, Richard Schiff, Joshua Malina and Dule Hill, called for the establishment of Veteran Treatment Courts, where substance abuse or mental health treatment is offered as an alternative to incarceration. Cast member Melissa Fitzgerald, who played C.J. Cregg's assistant Carol, is now the senior director of Justice for Vets, which leads the national effort »

Hillary Clinton Surrogate Says Elizabeth Warren Really, Really Not Qualified To Be VP

10 June 2016 6:10 AM, PDT | Mediaite - TV | See recent Mediaite - TV news »

While many liberal Democrats, along with party leaders like Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-nv), are pushing Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-ma) as a vice-presidential pick who could help Hillary Clinton retain some of the Bernie Sanders wing of the party, prominent loose-lipped Hillary surrogate and former Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell may have thrown a monkey wrench into the works by telling a local Philadelphia radio station that Warren is not qualified to fulfill the most important requirement of a vice president. »

Winners of Inaugural Atx-Black List Script Competition Announced (Exclusive)

9 June 2016 10:00 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Atx and The Black List partnered with Bad Robot, Carlton Cuse Productions, FX, Sony and USA Network on a new writing program, designed to find TV writers for staffing consideration across participating networks, studios and production companies.

The contest, which was announced this January, drew over 1,000 applicants. 16 winning scribes have been selected.

To be considered, writers had to submit their original pilots to The Black List’s website. The strongest pieces — both half-hour and hourlong content — were shared with studios, networks and production companies that were tasked with choosing writers with whom they’d like to work.

This year marks the inaugural contest for the Austin-based television festival, which kicks off today.

“Atx Television Festival strives to support TV writers — both established and up-and-comers — not just through the festival itself, and our year-round programming, but through key partnerships such as this with The Black List, so we thought this was »

Horror Highlights: New Chucky Doll, Wizard World & Crypt TV, Mondo’s Cronenberg Vinyls, Screamfest 2016, Shortwave

25 May 2016 8:00 AM, PDT | DailyDead | See recent DailyDead news »

Chucky’s back and better than ever… Mezco Toyz presents their newest Chucky doll based on his likeness in the first Child’s Play movie. Also: Wizard World and Crypt TV’s eight-city video showcase, Mondo’s Cronenberg vinyls, the Screamfest 2016 announcement, and over 10 photos from Shortwave.

Photos of Mezco Toyz’s New Chucky Doll: From Mezco Toyz: “Unlike the scarred and battle-damaged look Chucky normally bears (people have tried to destroy him in six films so far), this version represents the cleaner, earlier Chucky. His trademark outfit is un-slashed, his face is not yet mauled.

Just as he did in his films, Chucky has lots to say from his trademark “My name is Chucky” to far more sinister phrases.

The star of the Child’S Play films, Chucky stands fifteen inches tall and features real cloth Good Guys clothing, eleven points of articulation, his trademark orange hair and realistic glass-like eyes. »

15 Things You Never Knew About Grey's Anatomy

16 May 2016 12:15 PM, PDT | POPSUGAR | See recent BuzzSugar news »

If you're a Grey's Anatomy fan, there's probably not much you don't know about the show. But as the end of season 12 draws near, we thought we'd put together some of the lesser-known facts about the medical drama. If you do already know some of these trivia bits, then pat yourself on the back, because we dug deep. The guts and gore you see on screen are not human but are in fact a mix of cow organs, chicken fat, and red jello. Fun! Rob Lowe was offered the role of Dr. Derek Shepherd but turned it down to star in a CBS drama called Dr. Vegas, which was canceled after five episodes. Kevin McKidd (aka Dr. Owen Hunt) is Scottish, and hearing his accent will mess you up. Miranda Bailey was the only role written with a character description ("tiny with blonde curls"), but when Chandra Wilson auditioned for the role, »

One Year After Fatal Amtrak Crash, Grieving Loved Ones Are Still Searching for Answers: 'Why? Why Did This Happen?'

12 May 2016 8:30 AM, PDT | PEOPLE.com | See recent PEOPLE.com news »

It's been exactly a year since Amtrak. No. 188 derailed in Philadelphia, killing eight people and injuring more than 200. As families continue to grieve for their loved ones who died in the May 12, 2015 crash - and others still cope with debilitating injuries - they continue to ask a still-unanswered question: What happened? "Why? Why? Why could this happen? Why was he going so fast? Why didn't he slow down?" Larry Saia, whose best friend, Giuseppe Piras, 40, was killed in the wreck, told New York's Daily News. "We can't bring Giuseppe back, I know. But they could tell us how - why - this happened. »

11 Actors Too Legit to Be Superheroes

10 May 2016 11:56 AM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

In this day and age where superhero movies rule the box office roost, it seems that every actor is getting sucked in. What these films seem to do is hedge their bets with young thespians on the upswing, and older actors that lend the film some credibility. Some examples of this might be Marlon Brando in Superman, Robert Redford in Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Anthony Hopkins in Thor. One might also make the case for Natalie Portman in the Thor films but that is another story...

However, there are some actors who cannot play ball. Actors who, by the very definition of the craft of acting, don't see a role like Iron Man as anything to get excited about. In fact, some years ago Movieweb interviewed Thomas Jane regarding the role of The Punisher. When asked if a role like that was something he coveted Jane replied, "It isn't Shakespeare. »

Tom Hanks: His best performances to date

20 April 2016 8:27 AM, PDT | Hollywoodnews.com | See recent Hollywoodnews.com news »

This week, both at the Tribeca Film Festival as well as opening in theaters, we have an independent movie that stars Tom Hanks. Especially considering how infrequently Hanks acts in small films these days, this is something to take notice of. The film in question? Well, it’s A Hologram for the King, of course. Side note, this is another example of a thing that I mentioned yesterday, namely that a Tribeca title is going basically straight to general release. There’s another one of these still to discuss before the week is out, but right now, Hanks’ flick is what is in the spotlight. I see it tomorrow, so instead of delving too deep into it, I’ll be looking at his career and what I feel are his best performances so far to date. Fun, right? We’ll, here goes nothing! Quickly, a bit on the film itself. »

When Actors Stop Acting And Start Living A Role

17 April 2016 4:05 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

This week, Neil Calloway argues that method acting is often unnecessary…

This week it was revealed that Jared Leto sent pornography and condoms to his Suicide Squad co-stars in preparation for his role as the Joker. When I did that with my work colleagues I got arrested, but it turns out to be Ok if you’re an Oscar winning actor. It does also highlight the issue of when acting crosses the line into living a role.

There is a long and not so proud history of actors going above and beyond to immerse themselves in the character they are playing to ensure a great performance.

Daniel Day-Lewis is currently not looking for acting work as he believes it would be hard to top his performance as the title character in Lincoln, during which he would send his co-stars text messages in character as Abraham Lincoln; I do hope Sally Field »

The Performer | Lindsey Morgan

The Show | The 100

The Episode | “Nevermore” (April 14, 2016)

The Performance | Forgive the selfishness of this request, but is there any chance The 100 might consider shoving that A.I. chip back into Raven’s head? Don’t get us wrong, we’re thrilled she survived the world’s riskiest game of Operation, but Morgan’s performance (both this week and last) as an erratic, Alie-possessed sociopath was so satisfying, we refuse to accept that it’s really over.

And let’s be real: Possession isn’t the easiest look to pull off. We’ve all seen laughable examples, »

Kevin Hart Says He May Be Done With Stand-Up Touring

13 April 2016 6:50 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Kevin Hart may be done with touring.

After performing 156 shows on his most recent stint on the road, and journeying across 112 cities, 13 countries and five continents, the comedian says be may put the suitcase in storage. He has nothing left to prove.

“I don’t know if I’m ever going to go out and do it again,” Hart told theater owners at CinemaCon on Wednesday, adding that it was “my last fucking tour.”

Hart may be the most successful stand-up comic of his generation, commanding the kind of crowds that Eddie Murphy and Steve Martin did in their prime. Fans of the comedian can take solace in Hart’s upcoming movie, “What Now?” It features Hart in the midst of his global road-trip, culminating in his sell-out show at Lincoln Financial Field, home of the NFL’s Philadelphia Eagles.

Instead of a “Last Waltz”-like rumination on the grind of the road, »

The 25 greatest Oscar speeches

We're just a week away from another gold-tinged year of speeches, upsets, and snubs. After all the hype, what ends up mattering about the Oscars? I'd argue it's the speeches, and that's why we're picking the 25 best acceptance speeches ever -- by actors only. Sorry, but glamor is a key element in any Oscar moment and I don't have time to remember if the guy who adapted The Last Emperor thanked his mom.  25. Dustin Hoffman, Kramer vs. Kramer Dustin Hoffman's seriousness initially seems worrisome, but his mix of sarcasm and sincerity is right for the ceremony.  24. Marion Cotillard, La Vie en Rose Cotillard's tearful speech makes you realize how rare it is than an Oscar recipient is surprised to win. As Cotillard scrambles to make sense of the honor, she comes up with an ebullient finale: "Thank you, life! Thank you, love! It is -- there are some angels in this city. »

Slippin’ Jimmy McGill is back on AMC’s “Better Call Saul” and there’s still some time to go before he becomes the wisecracking corrupt lawyer viewers came to love as Saul Goodman on “Breaking Bad.” The prequel series kicks off its second season by following up on Jimmy’s “Smoke On the Water” kiss off to the straight life from the Season 1 finale, but pulls back to reveal that Jimmy’s own version of breaking bad hasn’t happened just yet.

His brother Chuck (Michael McKean, still a regular even though he’s not on screen this week) may be out of his life, but Jimmy retains a powerful connection with Kim Wexler (Rhea Seehorn). In fact, she officially goes from friend to “friend with benefits” after Jimmy introduces her to the »
