Storyline

A couple of student nurses decide to join some doctors to work in a medical station in the rain-forest a few hours flying-time from the Mexican town Catamaco. As they fly from Catamaco towards the clinic (which actually consists of just a few huts and almost none equipment) one of their three planes has to go down because of engine malfunction. It crashes somewhere in the jungle causing severe injuries to the passengers. The following day describes the attempts to save the lifes of the passengers (both nurses and doctors) in spite of the poor chances they seem to have. There is almost no medicine available, the supplies they brought with them were all on the plane going down and were stolen by native drug-dealers when they arived at the site of the crash first. In the afternoon they decide to take the injured to a nearby village with a runway long enough that the Learjet of the Californian Air Rescue team could take them to a clinic in the U.S. Not only is the journey there very ... Absolutely NOT a Bad Movie!!!
27 November 2002 | by (Fairbanks, U.S. Territory of Alaska) – See all my reviews

Another TV-movie. I seem to watch a million of these. With this one, as usual, I had no idea what I was in for. I was in for a treat. This movie ROCKED! Okay, maybe not rocked but it didn't put me to sleep, either, far from it! Without a doubt in the world this movie does MOST DEFINITELY NOT deserve a "1" rating. No. I'm APPALLED that so many people gave this a "1"

  • those people deserve to be shot... no, just kidding but they should have
their head examined. I realize that is their opinion that this movie was bottom of the barrel trash and being human they are entitled to that opinion although in this case their opinion is dead wrong. This movie was not perfect by any means. The directing at times was mediocre and a few times was even kind of lame, sort of textbook-ish. One really bad spot had a guy walking down a trail hacking his machete at plants that weren't even blocking his path but he kept chopping like they were really in his way. Overall the writing seemed pretty good but at times could've been a little more exciting. Even though this story is (or is based on) a true story there was room to have the audience on the edge of their seat more than they were, well, more than I was. There were also these drug guys, good and bad, in fields that clearly weren't pot, ummm, it was clear to me... anyway, they were there occasionally but didn't really need to be! The fact that planes couldn't land at night could have just been spoken about without wasting time with needless images of Federales chasing the bad guys in the jungle. Okay, now all of that that sucked really did not at all distract heavily from the story. On the bright side there were some good acting performances here. The ensemble cast did well together and Robert Loggia shined on his own but it's almost too bad he and/or Lindsay Wagner didn't have more room to stand out. What certainly did stand out and brought a tear, well, a few tears to my eyes was the portrayal of the generosity of the rural Mexican villagers. The way they came to the aid of the doctors and nurses who were there to give them aid was really very touching. That alone was worth the price of this months cable tv bill! So very well done. I guess I would be remiss if I didn't mention J.Lo - she was the biggest star in this movie, in a way, I mean, she's the biggest star of this whole cast nowadays but then she only had 7th billing! One of her very first roles and since it was a small one, aside from her beauty, there was really no indication she'd go from a Nurse in the jungle to a Maid in Manhattan. Kind of interesting to see such stars in their earliest roles even if they don't contribute a whole lot to what they're in. ANYWAY, I'm giving J.Lo and the movie my stamp of approval, mostly a delight to watch, something I'd watch again in a heartbeat but then again I might be biased a little 'cause I have three things in common with the story - I'm a Paramedic, beginning bush pilot, and enjoy volunteering in clinics in various countries around the world. Just hope I never get in a predicament they did here. My grade for this: B
