Ash vs Evil Dead, Season 1, Episode 3, “Books from Beyond”

Written by Sean Clements

Directed by Michael J. Bassett

Airs Saturdays at 9pm (Et) on Starz

“Bait”, the second episode of Ash vs Evil Dead, was an exciting course correction for the series after a disappointing premiere. But declaring Ash vs Evil Dead a success based on that episode might have been premature. This week’s episode, “Books from Beyond”, is a quick, weightless oddity that tries to pack a bunch of elements into a brief 30 minutes, and doesn’t quite succeed. Ash (Bruce Campbell) and his new friends Pablo (Ray Santiago) and Kelly (Dana DeLorenzo) (a group Pablo has now dubbed “The Ghost Beaters”, much to Ash and Kelly’s chagrin) head off to Books from Beyond with hopes of finding something in the Necronomicon to stop the recently unleashed evil forces. The series has been teasing getting to this »

Lovecraft by Any Other Name: 10 Films Inspired by H.P. Lovecraft

8 October 2015 3:44 PM, PDT | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

H.P. Lovecraft doesn’t translate to film very well. Many have tried, few have succeed. Lovecraft’s stories are mood-driven, using his dense antiquarian writing style to tell tales that say so much while unfolding so little in terms of action. This doesn’t exactly lend itself to a cinematic adaptation. Yet several films have found a way to tackle Lovecraft without actually adapting Lovecraft. The following films pay tribute to Lovecraft without actually adapting any of his stories.

10.Evil Dead

Sam Raimi’s 1981 The Evil Dead features one of Lovecraft’s most widely known creations: The Necronomicon. Lovecraft used this book of magic, which was attributed to the fictional Abdul Alhazred, in several of his stories. This recurrence was one of the many Lovecraftian elements that gave a reader the sense of an ever-growing mythology — stories all loosely connected, existing in the same mad universe. Shout! Factory and Vancouver-based Arcana Studios have inked a North American distribution deal for the forthcoming animated film "Howard Lovecraft and the Frozen Kingdom," the companies announced today. Based on Bruce Brown's popular graphic novel, the film, written, directed, and produced by Sean Patrick O'Reilly ("Pixies"), will receive multi-platform U.S. and Canadian releases from Shout! Factory in 2016. The timely acquisition capitalizes on the current vogue for big-screen comic book adaptations, as well as renewed interest in author H.P. Lovecraft, whose work inspired a thicket of allusions in the first season HBO's "True Detective." The graphic novel introduces Lovecraft's particular brand of eerie fiction—including the famed book of magic known as the Necronomicon—to a new generation, following young Howard through a portal and into a dangerous frozen world, where he befriends a monster named Spot.
