In the summer of 1968, months after the releases of We’re Only in It for the Money and Lumpy Gravy and a few months ahead of the release of Cruising with Ruben & the Jets, Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention found time for a five-hour concert on the Sunset Strip. A new box set, Whisky a Go Go, 1968 — due out June 21 — chronicles the unique evening, which the band recorded for release but, in Zappa’s signature fashion, divvied up for spare parts on other recordings. Top 10? Hell, the only 10! Well not quite, but damn close! We’ve actually tallied a solid list of ten horror/thrillers that happened to be set on Valentine’s Day itself. Now, some spend the entire day reveling in lovelorn lethality, some merely glance past the February 14th date, but in just about every case, old cupid’s shooting an arrow in the head, if not the heart. Ah hell, you’ve heard enough. Here’s the Top 10 Valentine’s Day Set Horror/Thrillers!
#10. Lovers Lane (1999)
Before Anna Faris was spoofing Scary MOVIEs and wooing the world as The House Bunny, she happened to stroll down Lovers Lane, a listless paint-by-numbers slasher flick about a man who went on an indiscriminate murder spree on Valentine’s Day 13 year prior, only to return to town to stalk and slash the victims’ children, foully disemboweling them with his hook-handed murder weapon. Lovers Lane...

15 years ago Diablo Cody and Karyn Kusama joined forced to deliver "Jennifer's Body," a genuine cult classic that went from mismarketed box office failure maligned by critics who didn't understand its brilliance, to the reclaimed favorite that became one of the selling points in the marketing for "Lisa Frankenstein." Cody returns to the teen horror comedy space alongside Zelda Williams (in her feature directorial debut) with a zany, heartfelt, and unapologetically odd story about a particularly peculiar high school outcast named Lisa (Kathryn Newton) who goes on a murderous adventure with the reanimated corpse of a young man — whose grave she hangs out at — in search of new limbs, a sense of autonomy, and maybe even love.
Set against the backdrop of the candy-coated neon bubblegum of the 1980s, "Lisa Frankenstein" makes no qualms about being for weirdos, and by weirdos. It's the resulting lovechild of a raucous orgy between "Edward Scissorhands,...

In 2023, two major industry strikes put movies on hold. In the upcoming year, it should be interesting to see if the releases reflect that major halt in work or if things will move forward as usual. Many blockbuster releases claim to be on track to come out on their original dates, but there is always time to push them back if needed. Let’s preview the movie 2024 release schedule and see if some of your most anticipated films will arrive on time.
January Night Swim – January 5th
Just the premise alone brings a lot of atmosphere to the idea. A nighttime use of a swimming pool always brings a certain air of creepiness to it. This is produced by horror king James Wan and Blumhouse. With their usual smaller budgets, it’s easy that this one will be a win even if the box office isn’t huge. Horror hit...

Tobe Hooper's "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre" is so raw, bleak, and gritty that one could be forgiven for thinking they discovered a legitimate snuff film. The interior of the killer family's household, festooned with human bone-encrusted furniture and lampshades made from skin, looks more like a grim discovery than a constructed set. It's well known among the film's fans that many elements of "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre" were inspired by the crimes of notorious murder and arts-and-crafts enthusiast Ed Gein. Gein, who actually lived in Wisconsin, is confirmed to have murdered at least two people, although he frequently plundered a nearby graveyard for building materials. A list of Gein's grisly crafts can easily be found by true crime enthusiasts, and the makers of "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre" recreated some of them in shocking detail.

Most artists, if they’re lucky, invent one thing. But Kenneth Anger, who was a filmmaker, an author, a debauched aristocratic scenester and, to the day of his death at 96, a figure of puckish mystery, invented several things, each one of them epic.
In “Fireworks,” his transcendent 14-minute avant-garde film of 1947, Anger invented the very consciousness and imagery of gay liberation — not the desire to be liberated (which was buried in the hearts of gay people everywhere), but the rapturous visual reverie of what that liberation might look like, what it would feel like, why it seemed so forbidden, and why it needed to be. In “Scorpio Rising,” his homoerotic demon-biker/Top-40-orgy blast from the underground, Anger invented MTV, invented what Martin Scorsese did in “Mean Streets” and David Lynch did in “Blue Velvet,” invented a way to express how music and reality talk to each other.

Luis Felber’s life changed in January 2021 when a mutual friend set him up on a blind date with Lena Dunham. The Winchester, U.K.-born son of a North London Jewish businessman father and Peruvian painter mom, Felber was at first hesitant, having been in lockdown for most of the year, writing love songs on his iPhone for his group Atttawalpa.

Exclusive: As it approaches the launch of its free, ad-supported streaming service, Chicken Soup for the Soul has set content deals with Kin and Reel One Entertainment and lined up a slate of originals.
The service is joining the portfolio of its namesake parent, Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment, which also runs Crackle, Popcornflix and other services. Chicken Soup for the Soul is already available as a free, ad-supported television channel on Plex, FreeCast, Redbox, LG Channels, Stirr, Xumo and Vizio. The full AVOD version, with thousands of on-demand hours of programming, will go live during this quarter.
Kin makes lifetyle shows with talent including Tia Mowry, Adrienne Bailon Houghton, Jeannie Mai, Malika and Khadijah Haqq and Angela Simmons. In addition to circulating on social platforms, they are syndicated to linear broadcast and streaming. One example is cooking show Comfort Kitchen, hosted by Mowry.
Reel One Entertainment specializes in scripted dramas and will also be providing original movies for Chicken Soup. Plans call for one Reel One original to be released each month. Titles in the works include For the Love of Chocolate, Love Afloat, A Priceless Love, A Slice of Chicago Romance, Love for Starters, A Bouquet of Love, Love Map, A Snapshot of Forever, Love Amongst the Stars, The Beauty of Love, Love at the Ranch, and Love in Full Swing. Tom Berry, CEO of Reel One Entertainment, said Chicken Soup’s “vibrantly loyal audience is a perfect fit for the fun and romantic themes our titles will represent.”
Also premiering on Chicken Soup for the Soul will be its latest original, Smart Home Nation. The show is produced by Efran Films in association with Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment and Parkside Entertainment, and hosted by Tanya Memme. Other originals planned for the new AVOD service’s slate include Hidden Heroes, Animal Tales, The New Americans, Project Dad, and Going From Broke. Ashton Kutcher is an executive producer of Going from Broke, which has previously been a big draw on Crackle, according to the company.
“When planning the launch of the Chicken Soup for the Soul AVOD streaming service, we set the bar very high,” said Jeff Meier, head of programming for Crackle Plus, ‘We’ve exceeded our own expectations and are excited to be launching with a robust slate that features lifestyle TV staples, fan-favorite personalities, and engaging movies and originals our target audience will be sure to love.”
The service will also offer classic series and movies from the Sonar library. Titles in that vault include Mothers and Daughters, with Susan Sarandon, Sharon Stone, Courteney Cox, Christina Ricci, Selma Blair and Mira Sorvino; Morning Glory, with Christopher Reeve and Deborah Raffin; and My Boyfriend’s Back, with Sandy Duncan, Jill Eikenberry and Judith Light. The Sonar library came to Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment via the acquisition of Sonar Entertainment last year. In all, Sonar has 1,400 hours of programming, across 600 titles with 268 Emmy and 16 Golden Globe wins among them.
Philippe Guelton, president of Crackle Plus, said last November’s launch of the Chicken Soup for the Soul Fast channel started a number of integration efforts. “We’re launching a branded Chicken Soup ‘tray’ on Crackle, to give fans easy access to the content as it rolls out wide with additional partners over the next few months,” he said.

The Tulip quickly blossomed into front-runner status on “The Masked Dancer” after she came out tapping in the series premiere episode in December. The elegant flower sent panelists Paula Abdul, Brian Austin Green, Ken Jeong and Ashley Tisdale into a frenzy when they realized they were witnessing a dancing phenom. Now in full bloom, the Tulip will compete for the Diamond Mask trophy in hopes of becoming the first celebrity to win the Fox reality TV dancing competition.
Tulip delivered her first performance in Episode 1, dancing her petals off in a tightly choreographed tap routine to “Fergalicious” by Fergie. The panel was convinced the blooming flower was no novice to dance, but they couldn’t decide if she was a professional dancer, athlete or pop star. Tulip’s contemporary performance to “Fields of Gold” by Eva Cassidy in Episode 4 brought guest panelist Rob Lowe to tears and solidified her position as the one to beat.

The Tulip is one of the stand-out stars of season 1 of “The Masked Dancer.” She landed a spot in the Top 4 competing on February 10 with her sensational routine last week set to “My Boyfriend’s Back” by the Chiffons. That display of dance skill had the four judges singing her praises. However we are more convinced than ever that the four judges are on the wrong track about the Tulip being Charli D’Amelio, Ariana Grande or Heather Morris.
To solve the mystery of who is hiding inside the Tulip costume, we’ve gone back and watched all of her earlier appearances: “Fergalicious” by Fergie on December 27; “Fields of Gold” by Eva Cassidy on January 20; and “Thank U, Next” by Ariana Grande on January 27. And we’ve taken another look at all of the clues videos for Tulip.

“The Masked Dancer” staged an “American Idol” reunion on Wednesday night, as “Idol” Season 6 winner Jordin Sparks was the next celebrity to be revealed on the show. And correctly guessing her? Former “Idol” judge and current “Masked Dancer” panelist Paula Abdul.
Sparks was revealed to be the person under the Exotic Bird costume on Wednesday’s edition of the hit series. Here’s what might have given it away: She was unmasked after dancing to Abdul’s “Opposites Attract.”
“When they told me that [Abdul] was judging, the first thing that popped into my head was I can’t believe that all this time later I’m now going to be on another competition show stage with her sitting at the judging panel,” Sparks told Variety. “That blew my mind. And I was like, she’s gonna know. When she guessed me, I was floored but I was actually very happy that it was her guessing.

You can now count the number of remaining “The Masked Dancer” contestants on one hand. Cotton Candy, Exotic Bird, Sloth, Tulip and Zebra survived last week’s Super 6 showdown and returned this week as members of the elite Top 5. Each of these hop-steppers gave it their all on the stage on Wednesday night, but one was sadly eliminated and forced to reveal their true identity in front of America. Special guest judge Mayim Bialik joined regular panelists Ashley Tisdale, Brian Austin Green, Ken Jeong and Paula Abdul this week. So which mystery dancers advanced to next week’s Final 4?

The Weinstein Company’s “Gold” earned $3.4 million its opening weekend, marking Matthew McConaughey’s worst wide release opening of his career. That doesn’t include “My Boyfriend’s Back,” in which McConaughey had a minor supporting role. Heading into the weekend, the studio had anticipated an opening in the $3 million to $4 million range although an opening in the $8 million to $10 million range would’ve been better news for the film costarring Edgar Ramirez, Bryce Dallas Howard and Corey Stoll. Johnny Dingle's passionate love doesn't die... even when he does. Johnny the zombie's (Andrew Lowery) journey to take Missy McCloud (Traci Lind) to the prom is getting a high-definition upgrade, as Mill Creek Entertainment will release 1993's My Boyfriend's Back on Blu-ray for the first time early next year.
According to Blu-ray.com, Mill Creek's My Boyfriend's Back Blu-ray is slated for a March 15th, 2016 release. In addition to Lowery and Lind, the dark romantic comedy also stars Edward Hermann, Mary Beth Hurt, and Cloris Leachman. The film marked early big screen appearances for Matthew Fox, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, and Matthew McConaughey. Bob Balaban directed from a screenplay by Dean Lorey.

My Boyfriend's Back is a fun, totally tongue-in-cheek '90s comedy about a guy who dies before he gets to go on the date of his dreams. So, naturally, he defies death, climbs out of the grave, and goes back to his normal life. And everyone, well, mostly everyone, pretends like it's totally okay that he's a zombie, even as he starts eating those around him. Life After Beth looks a little like that, though with the genders swapped. It stars Dane DeHaan as a boy in love with a girl (Aubrey Plaza), who dies only to come back, seemingly normal but with superstrength and an insatiable hunger for human flesh. Here's what Erik had to say in his review from its Sundance world premiere earlier this year: The real highlight though is Aubrey Plaza, and when she's...

Philip Seymour Hoffman has built a respectable acting career over the past few years, picking up one awesome role after another. Besides being the man who will play the key part of Plutarch Heavensbee in "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire," he also happens to be an Academy Award winner, accepting a golden trophy in 2005 for his role in "Capote." With his fourth Oscar nomination this year for his masterful performance in, well, "The Master," the accolades keep raking in for one of Hollywood's finest talents.
Way before Hoffman was being recognized for his work, though, he appeared in a little-known zombie comedy (or "zom com," as we call them now) bullying students and wreaking havoc in his high school hallways. That's right. When Hoffman was just 26 years old, he had a small role in 1993's "My Boyfriend's Back," which centers around a high schooler who returns from the dead and...

Smart horror fans know that they have to be flexible on some things. Sometimes a vampire is a feral beast of a monster, and sometimes a vampire is a tall, handsome wimp who struggles with emotional baggage. Sometimes the boogeyman who used to scare you every Halloween is transformed into a hulking brute who kills people simply because his white-trash mama wouldn't take him trick or treating. And sometimes zombies, usually the most basic and consistent of movie monsters, are not mindless chewing machines, but love-struck young men who change their ways when enamored with a pretty human female. It happened in the little-seen My Boyfriend's Back (1993), and the concept of "undead boyfriend" is back again with Warm Bodies, a certifiably strange but quietly appealing "zombie rom-com" that's based on the novel of the same name by Isaac Marion.

It's easy to call Matthew McConaughey a movie star now, but back in 1996, the most notable role for the actor was in the 1993 cult comedy Dazed and Confused and, a supporting role as Drew Barrymore's love interest in 1995's Boys on the Side. It was the 1996 adaptation of A Time to Kill that first tested McConaughey's ability to lead a movie, even if he was getting plenty of help from Sandra Bullock and Samuel L. Jackson, both of whom have a more prominent position on the poster.
Based on the novel by John Grisham, A Time to Kill followed McConaughey as lawyer Jake Brigance, who takes on a case that confronts the deeply-rooted racism of the Mississippi Delta area. Considered a success on all fronts, A Time To Kill made it to our list of the Top 10 Samuel L. Jackson movies as well as the Top 10 Sandra Bullock movies.

What strangeness doth producer/writer Jason Witter and director Ryan Denmark bring? And how do they reinterpret a classic play for a zombie generation? In what gets created, Romeo & Juliet vs. the Living Dead defies every expectation for a zombie film that aspires to be very literary. These two filmmakers have made a very unique product that can easily rank up there with author Seth Grahame-Smith’s "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies." Their passion for this bard's work is easily apparent, but their love for the classic zombie film is just as equally visible.
The team behind this movie put together an amazing product that will satisfy certain types of audiences. For those looking for spectacular makeup effects, that will not be found here.

It is that time of year again when Dread Central pays its respects to those who have worked in our beloved genre and made it to the red carpet on Oscar night 2011. The genre was in rare form when it came to the nominations. Darren Aronofsky's Black Swan was up for the gold in multiple categories (best picture, best actress, cinematography, and direction); even The Wolfman was on the short-list for best make-up. And win we did.
But let’s not get ahead of ourselves because therein lie the gems of VHS past for a large share of both the winners and folks who were nominated. Highlights include a win for Melissa Leo (nominated two years ago for Frozen River), whom we remember best as Judith 'MaMa' Baer in Deadtime Stories. And who could forget Christian Bale as Patrick Bateman in American Psycho? My fellow fright fiends, he brought home the gold last night.

A delightful site called Flavor Wire has come up with the rather ingenious idea of creating mixtapes for all the classic literary characters. Their most recent one is Lolita, from Vladimir Nabokov's classic novel. Her greatest hits include "Bad Reputation" and "My Boyfriend's Back."
But a wonderful one they did was for Holden Caulfield from J.D. Salinger's "The Catcher in the Rye." His mixtape includes "Mad World," "Sing, Sing, Sing" and "The State I Am In." The site has also done Tintin and Humbert Humbert.
We're already formulating ones for more favorite characters:
Hermione Granger: "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic," "Witchy Woman"
Laurie Lawrence: "Sisters," "Can't Fight This Feeling"
Raskolnikov: "Getting Away With Murder," "The Perfect Crime #2."
What are some that pop into your head?...

I Sell the Dead, the first feature by Glenn McQuaid, opens with grave-robber Arthur Blake (Dominic Monaghan) telling a priest (Ron Perlman) about how he met friend and co-worker Willie Grimes (Larry Fessenden, reprising his role from McQuaid's original short, The Resurrection Apprentice, on which this movie's based). Told with lengthy flashbacks, the story follows Arthur and Willie from regular grave-robbing to "ghouling." The difference? Grave-robbers will only steal the dead, but ghouls will steal "just about anything." They find vampires, aliens, zombies — all sorts of undead creatures and spooks, for which they can make a whole lotta moolah.
Everything's going swimmingly until Fanny (Brenda Cooney, who also appeared in The Resurrection Apprentice), Arthur's lady friend, gets involved. Smelling big money, she convinces Arthur and Willie to embark on a dangerous mission: steal a gig from a rival gang, the House of Murphy — Cornelius (John Speredakos), the man so mean...

It’s time once again for horror at the Oscars. Sunday’s festivities were filled with folks who have worked in the genre and per usual, I feel if it’s a win for Danny Boyle, it is a win for rage-zombie fans everywhere. Seems like a lot of folks this year are veterans of Exorcist: The Beginning, Amityville: A New Generation and Gremlins 2: The New Batch. Of course, the most important genre win would be Greg Cannom, a staple of 80’s horror effects; he worked on such films as Fright Night Part 2, The Lost Boys and The Howling.
Now some movies on this list might be “kinda horror.” These thrillers or genre-friendly frameworks are on the ghoulish cusp and are marked with an asterisk. Some flicks on the list are there because, what the fuck,...

Now here's a DVD that's only about 9 years late, but when you're talking about a DVD release of Class of 1999 - hey, better late than never.
The 1990 sci-fi horror action flick from Mark L. Lester (Commando, Firestarter) is actually something of a remake/follow-up to his own Class of 1984 that dealt with teachers being forced to turn vigilante to deal with their school overrun by violent street gangs. In the nine year ago future of Class of 1999, the problem with violent juveniles in the classroom has reached such a critical point that the government decides to test out a program replacing human teachers with cyborg teachers unbeknownst to the student populace. Reprogramming battle droids for academics proves to be a bad idea when the robots go haywire and declare war on their pupils. Let's just say this movie could have just as easily been titled Terminator High.
