Whilst traveling across America living off the money from a large inheritance, ex-fireman Nashe has a chance meeting with Pozzi, a professional gambler and card shark. Nashe agrees to fund the penniless Pozzi in a game of poker against two eccentric millionaires, Flower and Stone, in an attempt to regain some of his spent fortune. A Relatively Unknown Gem Of a Film
21 January 2004 | by (Bay Area, California) – See all my reviews

I first saw this film about ten years ago on late night television and was instantly mesmorized. This is not your usual film so I don't know if most people will like it. If you are looking for car crashes and explosions this movie is not for you. If you are looking for Top Notch Acting, Good Screen Writing, and great direction this might fit the bill. This might be one of those movies that if someone over-hypes it on you, you may be amped for something more. While slow moving at times the movie never ceases to be interesting, to me the slow moving portions of the movie were the most interesting. Although James Spader gets top billing and does a decent job it is the first time I found out who Mandy Pitinkin was. Wow what a great job Patinkin did, almost makes me wish he would of done more higher grade films. Charles Durning, M. Emmit Walsh, and Chris Penn show up and are perfectly cast. Excellent Screenplay by Paul Auster, Belinda Haas, and Philip Haas. Great direction by Philip Haas. Based on the novel the Music Of Chance which I have never read but now want to after seeing the movie. If you have any sense of style or wit, like movies that contain Gambling (CARDS), and what happens when you get in over your head you will like The Music of Chance (1993).
