Three plots converge on a bank robbery
4 July 2016 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

"Love, Cheat & Steal" (1993) is a neo-noir that critic John Grant has missing from his exhaustive list. This is a cleverly written tale with good acting from John Lithgow, as usual, and also from Eric Roberts. Mädchen Amick suffices in support. The better known Dan O'Herlihy and Donald Moffat also support.

The story is twisty. It involves three converging sub-plots. Lithgow is Moffat's son, a bank expert, and he's returned home to help get his dad's bank out of trouble. He discovers sub-plot two, which is that the bank is being used for money laundering. Meanwhile, in sub-plot three Lithgow's new wife, Amick, has a past with the criminal Roberts who has vowed revenge on her. He escapes prison, knowing where she is, and he's a bank robber to boot.

It looks and plays like a reasonably well-produced made-for-cable movie, which is not a criticism. The sub-plots mesh very nicely and naturally. Lithgow is first-rate in conveying his state of mind. Amick is suitably mysterious as she must be, being caught in the middle between Lithgow and Roberts.
