The stalking of Laura Black and subsequent murder of seven people and the injury of four by Richard Farley (February 16, 1988) and the three-year stalking and murder of actress Rebecca Schaeffer by Robert John Bardo (July 18, 1989) prompted California to pass the first anti-stalking laws in the country.
When Richard Farley (Richard Thomas) arrives heavily armed at the building where Laura Black (Brooke Shields) works, he notices his former colleague Lawrence Kane (John Durbin) approaching him and says, "Hi Larry". Larry replies, "You can't be serious", when he sees the guns that Richard is carrying and walks on. Then Richard calls, "Hey Larry. Cowboys and Indians". He then shoots Larry and from there his madness escalates.
In the scene when Richard gives the blueberry bread to Laura that he made himself it was indeed a surprise. This immediately followed Laura unlocking her office door and she found Richard in there waiting with his bread for her at 7 o'clock in the morning! He persuaded Laura to accept it and promptly left.
After Richard Farley (Richard Thomas) has blown Lawrence Kane "Larry" (John Durbin) away, he then prepares to blast the main doors made of glass when a car pulls up and its horn is sounded. Farley turns, shoots at the car and blasts the glass in the front passenger's window. The car then reverses away at speed.
