Storyline

This film recreates the strange events which happened on November 5, 1975 in the town Snowflake, Arizona. Travis Walton works in the White Mountains, clearing bush for the government. Driving home from work, his colleagues arrive back in town, claiming that Travis was abducted by aliens. Nobody believes them, and despite a lack of motive and no evidence of foul play, Travis' disappearance is treated as murder. Travis reappears after five days, but in time, the terrible memories of his alien abduction come back... Written by Murray Chapman <muzzle@cs.uq.oz.au>

Goofs

When the logging crew is encountering the alien craft, the radio in their truck goes haywire. There's a shot of one of the crew trying to adjust the radio, depicting a Philco AM radio. The radio is appropriate to the vintage, but Philco radios were the "factory" radios for Ford vehicles, and the truck used in the story is a Dodge. See more »

Great film, great cast, great music... based on a lie
10 January 2010 | by (Toronto, Ontario, Canada) – See all my reviews

Fiction is stranger than fact... This is a great film with great acting (particularly by Robert Patrick) and a particularly atmospheric score by Mark Isham, one of the pioneers of the kind of "fear music" that has invaded every form of American entertainment. Like all great fiction, however, it is based on a lie.

The "real" events that the film is based on (as related by Travis Walton) are already highly suspect and controversial and have been analyzed countless times, the general consensus being that the events were hoaxed. The film's script adds another level of complexity to these already suspicious story elements by altering the related facts in every conceivable way, including the description of the abduction itself and Travis' return to civilization. The real story is immensely more complicated. For a taste of those complications, see Wikipedia's article on Travis Walton.

This does not alter the fact that the film itself is finely crafted and acted and makes of that tangled web of lies a kind of worthy reality, which is the best thing Walton could have ever wished for. Just as the TV enactment of the Hill abduction case directly inspired this hoax, this story (and this film) have inspired countless abduction fairy tales ever since.

This film was shown today on the History Channel in Canada without any disclaimer. I guess it's just another instance where the "H" logo stands for "hignorance"...
