Dazed and Confused director Richard Linklater has revealed that he is working on a follow up to the 1993 coming-of-age comedy.
The original movie featured a large ensemble cast including Matthew McConaughey, Renée Zellweger, Ben Affleck, Milla Jovovich and Parker Posey.
Linklater announced his plans for the follow-up on Thursday (May 23) during a Reddit chat.
He described the forthcoming project to be more of a "spiritual sequel" and said that he does not plan to use the same characters.
Instead, Linklater said that he will produce a coming-of-age story that is more of a "college comedy", rather than taking the high school setting of the original.
He added that the Dazed and Confused follow-up will also feature "a big ensemble".
The Before Midnight director hopes to start production on the film sometime this fall.

Richard Linklater has always been a favorite of mine. From the classic high school flick Dazed And Confused to the engaging Suburbia, he has always found a way to tap into his characters with an honest edge. Yet it is Before Sunrise, Before Sunset and his latest, Before Midnight that really manage to convey love, relationships and the simple power of connecting with somebody in a fascinating and satisfying way. When I spoke to this incredibly talented writer/director, we talked about the »

Director Richard Linklater has been toying with a sequel to 1993's classic "Dazed and Confused" for a while - but will his planned follow-up include Matthew McConaughey, Ben Affleck and Parker Posey?
An announcement from the director on Wednesday had fans of the stoner movie momentarily putting down their bongs - but the planned movie is not an out-and-out sequel that follows the same characters, but something he's previously referred to as "spiritual sequel" to his high school coming of age story.
During a Reddit chat session this week, Linklater wrote that he was "hoping to make ...

Now that Richard Linklater has filed the latest of his once-every-decade progress reports on the characters played by Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy in Before Sunrise, he may finally be ready to turn his attention to revisiting the spirit of his other most-beloved ‘90s movie, the teen-nostalgia trip Dazed And Confused. The prolific and unpredictable filmmaker has been talking about doing a “spiritual sequel” to that movie for a long time; as recently as 2010, Linklater was lamenting that, while he had the financing in place, he still needed to “get a distributor that would do it or would give »

Richard Linklater is one of those amazingly talented directors who constantly surprises and delights. His latest delightful surprise, "Before Midnight," the third film in a series that started with "Before Sunrise" and continued with "Before Sunset," opens this weekend. It's easily one of the best films of the year and an absolute must-see. While engaging in a Reddit Q&A, ostensibly on the subject of "Before Midnight," he revealed that a pseudo-sequel to another one of his most beloved films, "Dazed and Confused," could be closer than you think. The film, which is titled "That's What I'm Talking About," was fully financed and ready to go as of a couple of years ago, but a number of projects got in the way (additionally, there was a hang-up when it came to distribution). But during the Q&A he said that he was, "Hoping to make it this fall, actually. A college comedy. »

Opening in limited release this weekend is one of the best films you're going to see this year: Before Midnight, director Richard Linklater’s follow-up to Before Sunrise and Before Sunset. The new film takes place 18 years after Before Sunrise and 9 years after Before Sunset, and sees Celine (Julie Delpy) and Jesse (Ethan Hawke) navigating married life on a trip to Greece. Like the previous films, it’s a lot of walking and talking, but it absolutely works because of the intimate and lived-in chemistry between the lead actors, who also co-wrote the film with Linklater. I can honestly say this is one of the best films I've seen in a long time, and even if you haven't seen the previous films, you should see it when it comes to a theater near you. The other day, I landed an extended video interview with Linklater here in Los Angeles. During »

If it seems like Richard Linklater has been discussing a sequel to "Dazed and Confused" for quite some time, that's because he has been discussing a sequel to "Dazed and Confused" for quite some time. Word about a possible "spiritual sequel" to that beloved 1993 film has circulated in one form or another since 2009.
"I carefully called it a spiritual sequel to 'Dazed' cause it's not the same characters," Linklater revealed during a 2009 interview with Collider. "If 'Dazed' was my high school, this is my college. It's about a weekend in college in that time period. It's funny ... I think it's the funniest thing I ever wrote." That script, which was called "That's What I'm Talking About," was set in 1980.
Just as soon as Linklater announced the project, though, it fell apart. By the end of 2009, Linklater revealed "That's What I'm Talking About" was off the table because of business reasons. »

Francois Truffaut kept checking in with Antoine Doinel, Spike Lee caught up with Mookie again...there comes a point in a director’s career where they can’t help but look back and try to work in the same space they worked in during their youth. Sometimes it’s an attempt to recapture old glory, other times it’s because there’s a genuine interest in tackling old subject matter with more experience, maturity and wisdom. And now, two more directors have decided to go headlong into past. First up, during a Reddit Ama (via Movies) -- oh, the times we live in -- Richard Linklater dropped the surprising news that he’s finally going tackle his long-discussed “Dazed and Confused” spiritual sequel/successor “That’s What I’m Talking About.” In 2010, he told us that the college-set period film was “just sitting there. I even have it financed, I »

Quick question: have you ever heard anyone say they didn't like Dazed And Confused? While writing this article I tried to remember if I've ever read a comment on any movie site that had someone posting negatively about the film (and not just some troll saying they hate the movie because they want to start shit) and to be honest I can't think of one. There are plenty of coming of age movies but few can top the stellar cast and soundtrack of Dazed And Confused. Director Richard Linklater has »

Before it hits theaters in Austin, La and NY this Friday (May 24), Sony Pictures Classics has released this new clip from Before Midnight. The film is scheduled to open in the St. Louis area on June 14th.
An American father, Jesse, (Ethan Hawke) is seeing off his son Hank (Seamus Davey-Fitzpatrick) at the Kalamata Airport in Greece. Hank’s returning to his mother and life in the U.S. after spending the “best summer ever” with Jesse and his family. The middle-schooler is more composed than his fortyish father, who hovers anxiously as their separation draws near.
Geography weighs heavily on Jesse. Outside the airport, he rejoins his family: Celine (Julie Delpy) and their young twin daughters Ella and Nina (Jennifer and Charlotte Prior). As they drive through the austerely beautiful rocky hillsides of Messinia, Jesse and Celine talk – about living so far from Hank, about her career as an »

Ladies and gents, it looks like we may get that Dazed and Confused spiritual sequel after all! We've been itching for another ensemble comedy from Richard Linklater ever since Dazed and Confused became required viewing in our house at least 47 times each year, and we couldn't have been more ecstatic when word spread that Linklater wanted to make That's What I'm Talking About, which he billed as a sort of spiritual sequel to what's arguably his most successful film to date. "I carefully called it a spiritual sequel to Dazed cause it’s not the same characters. If Dazed was my high school, this is my college," Linklater told Collider back in 2009. "It’s about a weekend in college in that time period. It’s funny… I think...

Filmmaker Richard Linklater is no stranger to unique narratives. Dazed and Confused follows a number of characters on the last day of school in 1976, and Before Sunset plays out essentially in real time as Ethan Hawke’s Jesse and Julie Delpy’s Celine spend a couple of hours together in Paris. However, Linklater’s most ambitious film to date has actually been in production for the last decade. Growing Up (aka Boyhood) stars Ethan Hawke and Patricia Arquette as a divorced couple raising their son, and Linklater and his actors have been shooting scenes for the film every year since 2002, as the story traces the boy’s life from first grade to 12th grade. Steve recently spoke with Linklater in anticipation of the release of Before Midnight, and the director provided a promising update on the status of Growing Up. Linklater said that he’s actually mulling over a 2014 release for the film, »

Twenty-two years have past since Richard Linklater burst on the indie film scene with "Slacker," but the director is still happy to work outside of mainstream Hollywood. In fact, he prefers it stay that way.
"If you make a film with someone, maybe they don't like it or they're looking for reasons not to like it. They're like, 'Oh, it didn't turn out the way we thought,'" Linklater told HuffPost Entertainment. "That's kind of my history: You do a film with someone and they kind of glass-half-empty it. 'Here's what it's not. Forget what it is; we're going to focus on that.'"
Linklater had no such concerns on his latest film, "Before Midnight." Set nine years after "Before Sunset" -- which itself was set nine years after "Before Sunrise" -- "Before Midnight" reunites Linklater with Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy for another talky romance about love and life »

Richard Linklater is one of the more versatile filmmakers working today. He very much marches to the beat of his own drummer, and his filmography is littered with varied and fascinating projects like Waking Life, School of Rock, Dazed and Confused, and last year’s terrific Bernie. Now, as Before Midnight—the wonderful and moving sequel to Before Sunrise and Before Sunset—is poised to open in limited release this weekend, Linklater has revealed that the Criterion Collection version of his breakthrough 1991 film Slacker will be released on Blu-ray. Linklater broke the news while talking to Steve in anticipation of the release of Before Midnight, and the filmmaker also discussed his desire to do a Blu-ray box set of all three Before movies at some point with some new extras. Hit the jump to read on. While Slacker was previously released on DVD by the Criterion Collection, Linklater said he »

Though the Austin-based Odd City hasn’t been around very long, the two poster releases they do have under their belt—a Chuck Sperry Dazed and Confused print and a pitch-perfect Amityville Horror print from N.E.—have been enormously impressive, an absolute cut above most of the ho-hum filler that’s slowly been flooding the market over the past year. So, when Odd City dropped us a line to tell us about the “very busy” summer they’re expecting to have and the subscription model they’re offering buyers, we couldn’t help but take note. Wanna know everything we know? Meet me after the jump, folks. We haven’t spent a lot of time discussing the matter here at Limited Paper, but the truth is this: there’s a whole lotta mediocre product being pumped into Poster World these days. Daft Punk's album doesn't come out for a few more days, but the French duo has offered fans another tidbit of info on the highly guarded project. In the "Random Access Memories" unboxing video posted Monday, the robots find their own record in a space-age control room of sorts.
The video unveils the packaging for the vinyl version of the album. It seems Columbia records opted for a classic, uncomplicated look to the project -- a smart fit given Daft Punk's insistence on returning to the golden age of disco.
On a more modern note, rumors that the entire album would hit iTunes as a pre-release stream persisted on Monday. The duo are scheduled for a BBC Radio 1 interview with host Zane Lowe, during which multiple songs were expected to debut.
They're also on the cover of the upcoming issue of Dazed and Confused. The magazine is hosting »

One of the first things director Richard Linklater did with money he had saved from his movies was buy a piece of land in Bastrop, Texas. He built a baseball diamond on it and a library in which he stored his collection of movie posters, a personal 35-mm. print of his 1996 film subUrbia, some paraphernalia from 1993’s Dazed and Confused, and writing going back 30 years, says Linklater’s frequent collaborator Ethan Hawke. When a forest fire tore through the area in 2011, it was destroyed. “Everything went up in flames,” recalls Hawke. “Thirty years of work. He lost everything. And when I called him to say how sorry I was, he was already thinking about how grateful he was for the fire for teaching him not to be materialistic. This makes him sound like Saint Rick. He’s not. He’s his own mysterious entity.”Julie Delpy, too, reaches for metaphysical »
