Hit-man Jean Rochefort's life is complicated by Marie Trintignant and Guillaume Depardieu
21 December 2014 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

"Wild Target" (1993) is a comedy-crime feature, carried by the top-notch acting of Jean Rochefort in a well-written part. He's 52 years old, the top hit-man in his field, and an expert at disposing of people by various means. No moralizing here. He's the protagonist, a fussy man. He's no madman. He goes about his jobs and his life neatly and efficiently, as befits his dress and appearance. He comes from a family of assassins, his mom being wheelchair-bound but still his mentor and still capable of wielding weapons.

One of Rochefort's jobs does not go quite right. There is a witness, a thief, a young man played by Guillaume Depardieu. Rather than kill him, Rochefort, who knows he is nearing the end of the line, takes him in to train him. The young man has little choice, and he is a very malleable sort anyway. A petty thief played by Marie Trintignant is marked for removal. She's into art fraud, but she clipped the wrong man, a gangster who hires Rochefort. Complications ensue, and a softening on the part of Rochefort, and first thing you know, it's he and the young people hiding away in mom's ancestral home to avoid being assassinated themselves.

The action slows down somewhat as their comedic interactions heighten. They are really a bunch of quirky oddballs. Don't expect too much plot or a consistent thriller scenario. Do expect kind of a mid-life crisis on the part of Rochefort, explored by his interactions with the others. Do expect the action to pick up as they become quarry.

Altogether a decent way to be entertained, packaged and handled smoothly. The high point for me is Rochefort's bringing his character to life wittily plus his professionalism, efficiency and confidence at his job. He makes this movie. He's deadpan nearly the whole way.
