Storyline

In Spokane, Washington, Juniper Pearl - Joon to those that know her - is an artist. She is also a mentally challenged young woman who requires around the clock care, as she could cause harm to herself or others. Her brother Benny Pearl, who owns and operates a garage and who is her only living relative since their parents died twelve years ago in a car accident, has made the decision that she would live at home with him, in the process sacrificing being able to have a personal life of his own. He has hired full-time housekeepers to provide that care when he isn't around. However, he has exhausted the list of housekeepers, who keep quitting because Joon is too much to handle. As such, Benny makes the decision that perhaps it would be best for all concerned if Joon were to live in a group home, something he is hesitating telling her for fear of her reaction. Into their lives comes Sam, the eccentric cousin of Benny's friend Mike, Sam who they obtained from Mike in a losing hand of poker... Written by Huggo

Trivia

The two restaurants used in the movie, the Milk Bottle Café and Furgusen's, were heavily damaged in a fire on September 25, 2011. Ferguson's Café was a total loss, but The Milk Bottle, one of two such Spokane, Washington icons, survived. The Milk Bottle (May) and Ferguson's Café (July) reopened in 2012. Ferguson's still features the counter where Sam danced the rolls. See more »

Eric: Benny, fuel line!

Benny: Hey Waldo, could you answer that phone?
Waldo: Hello?

A delightful and honest look at the power of love and friendship to resolve difficult issues.
10 June 2005 | by (Orangeville) – See all my reviews

It's delightful to watch the power of love and friendship resolve difficult issues. The cast is wonderful. I love when Sam swings from the rope and Joons face lights up! You feel sorry for Sam when he falls, but his understated, "ouch...ouch" is pretty funny. The comedy balances the drama beautifully. The music is memorable.

Continuity comment: When Joon comes down for dinner, salad and spaghetti ("in that order?", says Joon). At the table her knee is showing and in the back and forth dialogue with Benny her knee is covered by her dress and then uncovered. The peanut butter jar is also turned slightly.
