The title of the film refers to folklore about subterranean ghosts or creatures who are believed to menace miners. The 'Tommyknockers' of the film are, of course, the possessive alien spirits inside the buried spacecraft.
According to author Stephen King The Tommyknockers is an allegory for his own personal battles with substance abuse. The character of Jim Gardener is largely based upon King himself.
The plot where the wife kills her adulterous husband with the TV was earlier written as a short story called "The Revelations of 'Becca Paulson".
The films Italian title is "Le Creature del buio", meaning "The Creatures of Darkness."
When Sheriff Ruth Merrill is searching in the woods for Davey Brown, she is accosted by Bobbi Anderson's dog. She remarks that he is acting like a "Cujo." This is a reference to the Stephen King novel turned film of the same name.
