The cancellation of this show left a bad taste in my mouth
26 September 2002 | by (Montreal, Quebec) – See all my reviews

I did not like that "Saved by the Bell:The College Years" was cancelled after about 5 months. It wasn't a bad idea to go primetime on NBC but putting it on Tuesday nights before "The John Laroquette Show" was not a proper thing to do. It was not a good move to put it up against a established show like "Full House". NBC should have aired it on either Mondays after Blossom, Friday nights around 9:30, or on Saturday mornings if it just couldn't work on primetime. They shouldn't have given up on it after one season. I liked the plan to have "Saved by the Bell" in a college phase after the graduation from Bayside. I liked that Slater, Zack, Screech, and then Kelly were gonna go to the same college. "Mike Rogers" and "Leslie Burke" fit in well with them. What may have hurt the show was that by putting it on primetime, it could have been perceived as being geared towards college kids. Some of the episodes came off as being "immature" in terms of what a broad audience of young adults would watch. That "Alex" chick shouldn't have been on it after "Kelly" came back. The girl that was let go after the pilot should have remained on the show. "Alex" gave the show a "immature" feel to it. She shouldn't have been on the show to begin with. "The College Years" should have been more serious and creative since it was on in primetime. A continuation of "the high school atmosphere" was a problem. Despite that, about half of all the episodes were not boring to watch at all. A example of the serious and creative side of the show was the Slater episode where he realizes his true heritage from a fellow student and they do a sit in at the office of the dean. Overall, they should have just attempted to save it by going to Saturday mornings where the loyal viewers of the show would be. I was in eighth grade when it premiered in 1993 and I watched it every week. The ratings proved that older people weren't watching it, therefore it should have been on Saturday mornings after the primetime experiment failed. The show had great potential and cancelling it was a bad idea. It still leaves a bad taste in my mouth!!!!! I just look back on it as a unfinished project especially when it is shown on TBS Superstation.
