Storyline

Steven Matrix is one of the underworld's foremost hitmen until his luck runs out, and someone puts a contract out on him. Shot in the forehead by a .22 pistol, Matrix "dies" and finds himself in "The City In Between", where he is shown the faces of all the men and women he's murdered and a sea of fire. He's informed that he will be given a second chance. He must earn a reprieve from Hell by helping others. He then wakes up in the hospital, after an apparent "near death" experience. In each episode, Matrix meets a new "guide" from the world beyond, and is given a new assignment, much in the manner of an unwilling guardian angel. Usually his guides give him little or no useful information about the job to come, and his methods of handling the cases are sometimes as brutal as the rules of his old profession, but he gets the job done. Trivia

The premise described in voiceover by the main character, that he died and found himself beside an ocean of fire surrounded by his victims and passed by by a man who's possibly God, is almost the verbatim of a monologue given by a character in an episode of The Equalizer called Sea Of Fire. In the episode The Eqaulizer, Aka Robert McCall, brings a school gang to a morgue to scare them straight. He introduces them to a hit man who tells them about dying and waking on the shore of a sea of fire, surrounded by his victims, and a man who passes by him who might be God. See more »

Weird but overall enjoyable (although short-lived) experience.

I was inspired to watch this only through the poking and prodding of an old friend of mine. He had just gotten his boxes of stuff from his cousin in the south. Besides piles of frowned-upon literature he had tapes of rare shows that NO ONE AT ALL HAS SEEN!!! This ranged from the short (Mission Impossible was brought back a long time ago...rather unsuccessful) to the crazy. Some of these tapes were marked "Matrix" curious as to why he would copy one of my favorite movies onto tape (he already had it on DVD) we popped it in. WOW!!! What a ride. I was surprised to see Carrie-Ann Moss's name (couldn't really recognize her) in the credits. That's interesting. The show wasn't the best I've ever seen but it was an enjoyable diversion. Probably would've been better if I had seen it when it was on the air. I wasn't that old then so I might've been more inclined to enjoy the weird plot line.
