Of course you know it was based on the very popular film released in the summer of 1992. The show actually premiered during the May sweeps in 1993, nearly 9 months after the movie's run in theatres. It was fairly well publicized in national magazines and newspapers, publicity which caused pretty much everyone to watch the first episode. But I guess without Tom Hanks, Geena Davis, or Rosie O'Donnell in it, the American public deemed it somewhat apocryphal. I don't think it lasted past late May. But I liked it. Its run was so short that not even EP has a record for it.
A few of the film's lesser-known stars also starred in the TV show, Tracy Reiner (daughter of Rob) being the most famous. Jon Lovitz made a few guest appearances reprising his role as a sleazy but oddly loveable scout. Lovitz' performance was well received and it did help the ratings somewhat but in the end it didn't matter.
I guess `A League of Their Own,' like all TV shows based on films, will forever be haunted by the monstrous success of the hit show `Mash,' pretty much the only show based on a hit movie that actually rivaled its predecessor in popularity and critical acclaim.
For me, the school year of 1992-1993 was a very long and arduous one, culminating in my suspension from school in April 1993 for ditching school in the afternoons to go play golf and eat at McDonalds. So with High School's wretched and paralyzing grip still upon me in April 1993--and not willing to let go for another month and a half--I watched this show and recalled the pleasing and welcome respite that was the summer of 1992, when I had gone to a brand new United Artists theatre in Bakersfield,CA almost every day and watched movies like A League of Their Own, Single White Female, and Honeymoon in Vegas. Summer 1992 seemed so far away at that time. Just some memories for you.
This show probably should've been given another shot in the fall of 1993. But it wasn't meant to be, I suppose.
Basically I'm trying to find and write about every show that I remember that apparently no one else does.
