Jo Brand, as a comedienne, is a performer that can either make you laugh out loud or make you shout obscenities at the television. There's really no in between, you either love her or hate her. Her frank, vulgar stand-up routine is certainly not to everyone's tastes, but if you enjoy a bit of crude humour then you really can't go far wrong with Ms. Brand. I personally think she is extremely funny, so this series was a lot of fun for me.
In short, it was a showcase for Brand to weave her stand-up act with some comedy sketches. In the case of subject matter, there really was no new low to sink, for this was the epitome of base humour. The most popular topics to spout out of her mouth are men (and her hatred of them), food (and her love of it) and her appearance (in her own words, "Oh blimey, the fat bird's got a telly show!"). Whilst the routine was usually faultless, it was clear that it could easily run out of steam very fast, so Brand milks it for all it's worth, and is usually scathingly funny with it.
The sketches however, weren't always so good. There were a few inspired creations, such as The Drudge Squad, which was basically Brand as an inept policewoman with her partner, sitting in her car worrying about the weekly shopping and calling the babysitter to make sure her kids were behaving. Others didn't fare so well, and normally were rather tiresome.
Brand is a talented comedienne, but there's no range to her act. An endless barrage of "I hate men, I love food, I'm so fat" could get rather boring at times, but when she was good, she was very, very good indeed. So while this show wasn't necessarily a great one, it still provides the laughs when you need them the most. Jo Brand, I salute you on a job well done. For the most part, anyway.
