According to Dick Van Dyke, the series never got a full-season pickup. It was always renewed a few episodes at a time.
In one episode a stunt with a motorcycle was required. But the production team didn't have the budget to perform this stunt in real life. Dick van Dyke, being a computer animation enthusiast, created the special effects on his home computer using the LightWave 3D animation software and they were used on the show. He was paid $200 for creating the sequence.
Norman Briggs, the character played by Michael Tucci, was scheduled to be murdered by a man seeking revenge against Dr. Sloan in the 4th season finale "The Murder of Mark Sloan". Tucci begged producers not to kill him off and they agreed. The following season he was no longer on the show and no explanation was given as to where his character went.
Although Dick Van Dyke was born in 1925, his character Dr Mark Sloan was supposed to have been born in 1937.
Eric Dane played the part of a 'Dr. Mark Sloan' in greys anatomy for years, as homage to Dick Van Dyke's character in Diagnosis Murder.
Dick Van Dyke was already 67 when the series began.
The series was not well received at first, and was almost canceled at the end of season two.
There was some concern when the series began that Dick Van Dyke was too old to play a still-working doctor.
The character of Doctor Mark Sloan was first seen in an episode of Jake and the Fatman (1987).
When Scott Baio left the show, his absence was explained by having his character, Jack Stewart, quit his job at Community General to start his own practice in Colorado.
In the 1999 episode "Gangland", it is revealed that Amanda was a foster child. Victoria Rowell, who played the character, was a foster child in real life.
When Victoria Rowell became pregnant during hiatus, her pregnancy was explained by having Amanda get married to a serviceman who was never seen on the show.
Victoria Rowell is the 2nd cousin of Megastar Beyoncé.
Dr. Mark Sloan's blood type is AB negative on the show (3x10).

Long before Barry Van Dyke, Victoria Rowell and Charlie Schlatter joined the cast, they were all lifelong fans of their mentor Dick Van Dyke's projects.

Mary Tyler Moore was sent a script once, for her to make a Guest Star appearance in an episode of 'Diagnosis Murder', but she turned down the script, because she felt it didn't suit her. Dick Van Dyke also never appeared in her hit TV series 'The Mary Tyler Moore Show'. Both had previously co-stared in their TV show 'The Dick Van Dyke Show'
