The news that NBC is planning a remake/reboot of "Murder, She Wrote" starring Oscar winner Octavia Spencer unleashed waves of snark online Thursday (Oct. 24). It's the latest example of TV networks and studios turning to old properties in the hopes that a new audience will take to them.

Leaving aside the question of whether such reboots actually work -- recent history shows a lot more misses than hits -- the "Murder, She Wrote" news got us thinking: If we were profit-hungry TV executives, what other shows might be ripe for a 21st-century update? Some ideas, and the networks that would call them home:

"Diagnosis Murder" (ABC): As with the CBS original, a renowned physician moonlights as a police consultant and often ends up working with his detective son. Dick Van Dyke and his real-life son Barry starred the first time around; the reboot would reunite on-screen father and »

Bryan Cranston’s turn as a Drug lord Chemistry teacher Walter White in the hit HBO show Breaking Bad has captured the interest of millions of fans.

But what did he do before he became Heinsenberg?

1 July 2013 1:55 AM, PDT | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

Feature Rob Smedley 2 Jul 2013 - 07:00

Rob traces the evolution of the TV detective via their choice of outerwear. Enter macs, leather jackets, and posh flappy numbers...

Luther's back tonight on BBC One, and ooh, doesn't he look cool as he stalks around London's streets like a man with a grudge against a bus? That's not just because he's played by Idris Elba, and your mind has subconsciously associated him with the cool job of piloting giant robots in Pacific Rim, oh no. It's because, like all the best detectives, he's wearing a cool coat.

The coat has become the shorthand for the detective, not only telling you a lot about the copper wearing it, but about the era they're wearing it in. So, in a not at all blatant rip-off of the BBC's A History of the World in 100 Objects let's chart the TV detective's beat across our »

DVD Review: Quincy, M.E – Complete Series Three

7 March 2013 5:47 AM, PST | Blogomatic3000 | See recent Blogomatic3000 news »

In the United Kingdom there are some shows that are just repeated to within an inch of their television life but still keep on an weaving their magic on the audience.  Three of the best are arguable Columbo, Murder She Wrote and Quincy, M.E.  Quincy was a show that was fairly unique, it could almost be called the CSI of its time.  Jack Klugman created a character and made it his own, it was a sad loss when he died in December of 2012, the small screen (and big) lost a true legend.  In a celebration of just how good he was in the role it could be said to be somewhat of a fitting tribute that the third series is being released for us to enjoy.

For its time Quincy, M.E looked at quite a few controversial subjects, especially in the third season when one of the strongest episodes was about abusive relationships. »
