An Early Review of MacGruber Is… Positive?

8 December 2009 1:12 PM, PST | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

The evil genius Dieter Von Cunth is on the loose with a diabolical plan to acquire and detonate a nuclear warhead. Only one man can stop him. It's time for MacGruber to get on his feet and pound some cunth! Over at The Vertex Blog [1], Amir Bednarsh has been so fortunate as to get into an early screening of the newest SNL-feature film MacGruber. Okay, so some might raise an eyebrow as to the fortunate part, but in truth, it seems Amir actually was fortunate, as MacGruber has broken SNL-tradition and is actually ... good? Yes, that's right, Amir goes so far as to claim this the best SNL-flick since Wayne's World -- but then again, have there even been any half-decent films since Wayne's World anyway? Here's an excerpt of the review (no spoilers): When given the opportunity to see an early screening of MacGruber, I »

Toxic Birthday Suits

2 December 2009 7:00 AM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Your cinematic birthdays for 12/02. If it's your big day, let us know.

Steven, Lucy and Warren

1894 Warren William, charming snake, pre-code movie star who was often paired with formidable actresses like Claudette Colbert (Imitation of Life, Cleopatra), Joan Blondell (Gold Diggers of 1933, Stage Struck) and Bette Davis (Three on a Match, Satan Met a Lady)

1914 Ray Walston, the Damn Yankees! devil had a lengthy career on screens small and large

1914 Adolph Green, musical giant of 'Comden & Green' fame. I can't even begin to choose a favorite song by that duo. Plus they wrote the screenplay to Singin' in the Rain!

1923 Maria Callas, La Divina. Fanny Ardant recently played her in Callas Forever. The next actress who'll have a go at her is Eva Mendes in Greek Fire

1925 Julie Harris was Oscar nominated for her film debut (The Member of the Wedding), co-starred with James Dean (East of Eden) and »

Watch This: The Muppets' 'Bohemian Rhapsody'

25 November 2009 10:15 AM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

There are times in this busy world when I forget just how cool The Muppets are. Randomly mention the beastly little guys and gals, and I'll smile politely, vaguely remembering the good old days. Put them in front of me, however, and it's a challenge to not let out a real world, ear-breaking shriek of squee. I don't care how long they've been around -- The Muppets are cool, and they are no cooler than when they're delighting in the epic grandeur of rhapsody ... Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody," that is.

We all know the song. It was pretty epic in its own right, and then soared to new levels in Wayne's World, where it grabbed the #2 spot on the Billboard charts almost two decades after its release. Now the MuppetsStudio on YouTube have released the ultra-awesome clip you can see after the jump -- an arseload of Muppets singing the »

Roger Corman: Scorsese, Stallone, Sayles, and other A-listers talk about the B-movie king

13 November 2009 12:48 PM, PST | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

He gave life to teenage cavemen and candy-stripe nurses. Crab monsters and humanoids from the deep. T-bird gangs and towns that dreaded sundown. His name is Roger Corman. And on Nov. 14, he will receive an honor that no one would have predicted: an honorary Academy Award. The 83-year-old B-movie titan has made nearly 400 films as a director and producer. From the start, Corman was a magnet for hungry young actors, writers, and directors who would work for slave wages for the chance to make their first film. They called it the "University of Corman," and the alumni include Francis Ford Coppola, »

It's Party Time With 'Wayne's World' In Today's Sick Day Stash

11 November 2009 1:00 PM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Call them "cult classics." "Guilty pleasures." "Comfort movies." We all have a mental rolodex of flicks that may not be terribly popular but, for one reason or another, they resonate in a very special way. Maybe you saw it at the right moment. Maybe you just see gold where everyone else sees feces. Whatever the case, these are the special favorites that you keep stashed away for sick days. Here are some of ours.

Today we have a Sick Day Stash first. Last week, MTV's Rya Backer sang the praises of '90s classic "Mrs. Doubtfire" to the heavens. She so enjoyed the experience of spewing praise at one of her favorite movies that she volunteered to step up again this week and bare her love for "Wayne's World." That's all I've got to say. Take it away, Rya!

Hi, Again!

So last week, I ran my mouth about "Mrs. Doubtfire, »

New Moon Chris Weitz Interview

8 November 2009 8:00 PM, PST | MoviesOnline.ca | See recent MoviesOnline news »

MoviesOnline sat down recently with director Chris Weitz, screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg, and producer Wyck Godfrey to talk about their new movie, “The Twilight Saga: New Moon.”

Director Chris Weitz’s success at adapting books for the screen, including “About A Boy” and “The Golden Compass,” made him an obvious choice for this project, says Wyck Godfrey, who produced both “Twilight” and “New Moon.” “Chris has a history of helming fantasy films with complex effects as well as intimate character studies, and he works well with young actors. But it is his appreciation of Stephenie Meyer’s books and characters that made him the perfect director for “The Twilight Saga: New Moon.”

Melissa Rosenberg is proving to be one of Hollywood’s most versatile and sought-after writers, seamlessly transitioning from television to the silver screen. She wrote the screenplay for the vampire romance phenomenon “Twilight” directed by Catherine Hardwicke based on »

Lowe Won't Laugh On Set

6 October 2009 6:36 PM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Working with funnyman Ricky Gervais in new comedy The Invention Of Lying was "frustrating" for professional Rob Lowe - because the Brit kept ruining scenes by giggling through them.

The former The West Wing star insists his director and co-star couldn't keep a straight face for some comic moments.

He says, "He would laugh in the middle of takes and ruin everything... so that was frustrating."

Lowe, on the other hand, insists he has never "ruined a take" by laughing - even though many stars have tried to break his cool.

He says, "That's just a badge of honour. I come from the old school; I was a child actor (and) you're not supposed to break up on stage.

"People over the years have tried (to make me laugh) - Mike Myers in Wayne's World was probably the first, Dana Carvey, Chris Farley... Never once." »

The Invention of Lying Review

4 October 2009 10:27 PM, PDT | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

The Invention of Lying Written and Directed by: Ricky Gervais and Matthew Robinson Starring: Ricky Gervais, Jennifer Garner, Rob Lowe, Louis Ck, Jonah Hill You have to wonder what kind of person has it within them these days to conceive of a fantasy-based comedy and believe in it enough to see it through. Movies like this simply haven't been very good or funny lately, and despite a promising trailer, The Invention of Lying seemed destined to contain a zillion unexplainable and/or nonsensical holes, and would at best resemble a mediocre SNL skit stretched to 90 minutes. Most people opined that it looked like another take on Jim Carrey's Liar Liar. But of all things I worried that the brilliant creator of The Office, Ricky Gervais, would turn out a high concept comedy as torturous to sit through as Year One or Click. While it turns out that while some of these fears were well-founded, »

Wayne's World Hottie Tia Carrere Going Surfing

14 September 2009 9:46 PM, PDT | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Tia Carrere earned a lifetime's worth of fans in the Wayne's World movies, playing the bodacious Cassandra, a girl so dreamy she can be accompanied by "Dream Weaver." But will all those dudes who grew up crushing on her come out to see her hang ten? Carrere, whose career has been fairly stop-and-start since the glory days of the early 90s, will star in and produce Wave Dancer, a biopic about Hawaiian surfer Rell Sunn, nicknamed "Queen of the Makaha." According to THR, Sunn was also an expert diver, a karate black belt, and a hula dancer. Carrere, who was born in Honolulu, has picked Martha Coolidge to direct the film. »

The Invention Of Lying is Ricky Gervais' latest foray into big screen comedy, and this time he's co-directing. We've already seen and been quietly surprised by the trailer, and now comes this clip, bolstering our joy-metres to healthy levels. For anyone who remembers the certain kind of air Rob Lowe brought to his character in Wayne's World (undoubtedly his best work), then prepare to be blown away as he tops it here - the man is undoubtedly a comedy genius. Beyond CSI: Inside Anthony Zuiker's New Cross-Platform Experiment

8 September 2009 8:00 AM, PDT | Fast Company | See recent Fast Company news »

Anthony Zuiker created CSI, generating more than $6 billion. But with his new cross-platform experiment, his killer instinct is really kicking in.

A Man crouches on a 3-foot-by-3-foot glass-top table in a dank basement near the Los Angeles River, just outside of downtown L.A. The man is a contortionist. He's wearing a skintight, hooded latex body condom, bone white, zipped up the back to the top of his head, with holes for his eyes and a zipper over his mouth.

He nonchalantly folds a leg behind his neck and scratches his head with his toes. Next to him is a gallon jar of snails, and on a table, a pile of salt has been cut into lines in the shape of a maze. With a razor blade, the contortionist scrapes the glass clean between the lines, then deposits a snail in the center.

Snails disintegrate in salt, of course, »

The Five Best Films Based on Comedy Sketches

1 September 2009 2:07 AM, PDT | ifc.com | See recent IFC news »

Stretching a brief comedy sketch into an 80-plus minute feature is not a task for the timid, as the process of fleshing out quick, self-contained bits is rife with inherent risks -- the two main ones being that such an endeavor usually makes little sense and can spoil the original joke. Yet despite these pitfalls, a select few have succeeded where so many others fail, managing to retain the core aspects of their source material while creating developed narratives that expand upon their original conceits in ways that are smart and silly. While only two of the below five might actually qualify as "classic" (though feel free to argue otherwise), our choices for the five best films born from TV sketches all show a willingness to push boundaries and indulge in random flights of fancy in the service of goofy humor, a daring that can be attributed to inspired comedians recognizing, »

Dana Carvey On Conan: Impersonates Sotomayor, Obama, Leno And More (Watch)

17 July 2009 4:45 AM, PDT | Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news »

Dana Carvey visited 'The Tonight Show With Conan O'Brien' Wednesday night and did an exhausting series of riffs on everyone from Sonia Sotomayor to Conan and his predecessors, Johnny Carson and Jay Leno. The veteran celebrity impersonator (also known as Garth of 'Wayne's World' fame) and Conan reminisced about their early days on SNL together and laughed about the political destinies of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Al Franken. In part 2, Carvey talks about his recent trip to Italy, during which he circled George Clooney's house on Lake Como in a boat, and imitates his teenage son: "We're just gonna hang out in this weird old stadium?" Then he reenacts smoking pot with Paul McCartney. ("Paul, I don't know why they can't fill the world with silly love songs.") Watch: Follow HuffPo Entertainment On Twitter! »

'Bruno' Star Sacha Baron Cohen Is Just One Of Hollywood's Top Cinematic Chameleons

14 July 2009 12:30 PM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

How weird is it that, out of Sacha Baron Cohen’s three trademark characters, Ali G is now the least famous of them all? With this past weekend’s strong “Brüno” opening, the UK-born and raised funnyman has once again fooled the world into believing that he is someone else. Where he goes from here is anyone’s guess, but as we play Monday-morning quarterback there is an even more pressing question: is Cohen the greatest cinematic "chameleon" of all time?

There are few things I love more in a movie than when an actor fully immerses himself in another persona. Sometimes it’s for comedy, sometimes it’s for drama... but whatever the performance is in the name of, when done right it can make that performer a legend. Below are my favorite "chameleon" actors of all time. Post your thoughts in the comments section and tell us where »

MacGruber: The Movie Really Happening!

1 June 2009 10:38 PM, PDT | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

We've heard rumors of this, but tonight SNL star Will Forte confirmed that not only is a movie version of his popular "MacGruber" sketch happening, he's already finished writing it. Forte appeared on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon, introed with a MacGruber clip and played on stage to the tune of the MacGruber theme song. Fallon wasted no time in asking whether there'd be a MacGruber movie and Forte confirmed, "John Solomon, Jorma Taccone, and I just finished writing it. We're gonna make it in Albuquerque. It's me and Kirsten Wiig and cast to be determined." So this means bad hair and plenty of explosions right? Maybe not. Forte says "It's maybe a little different than people are thinking." There was a time, back in SNL's 90s golden age, when they cranked out movies based on popular characters at a ridiculous pace. Sometimes it worked and we got Wayne's World, »
