The film and television director will remain on the conservatory’s faculty, but plans to resume directing. Robert Mandel will step down as dean of the AFI Conservatory, remaining on the staff while he returns to film and TV directing.

Mandel is an alumnus of the Conservatory and has spent nine years as academic leader of the graduate-level film school. His credits include episodes of “The X-Files,” “Prison Break” and “Lost,” and the films “F/X” and “School Ties.”

During his stint at the American Film Institute Conservatory, he attracted more than a dozen faculty members including, most recently, James L. Brooks as artistic director. Mandel also beefed up the program of mentoring-supervision by professionals in the industry. He added courses in acting, independent film finance, television and show running. He also started a career office for job opportunities and established an AFI Fellow-Alumni mentoring program and helped create programs such as screenwriting pitch sessions to agents, managers and production executives.

Ben Affleck's enjoyed a career resurgence as well as internet ire of late. Here's a look at a few of his underappreciated films...

Ben Affleck doesn't need us. He's got a directorial career of three strong movies from three outings. He has a movie star spouse. He has two Oscars, one for both his downstairs and upstairs toilet, and he gets to tell his kids that he's Batman without having to lie. Furthermore, it's scary to think how good the boxset of his directorial work is going to be in 30 years' time.

The flick starred some of today's most well-respected actors like Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, alongside stars like Chris O'Donnell and Brendan Fraser. Ben and Matt have both gone on to win Oscars for their work in "Good Will Hunting," and Affleck landed his second Academy Award for "Argo."
