Superheroes & Oscar. 7 Lessons We've Learned

17 May 2012 7:32 PM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Last week while reading about The Last of the Mohicans (1992), an astonishing 20 years old now, my mind lept back to early 1993. Even in the pre-internet fueled days of Oscar watching, when we obsessives were fewer in number -- or at least disconnected from each other -- you knew that it was bizarre that such a super, handsome, well acted period epic that made a new Oscar winner (Daniel Day-Lewis) into a much bigger mainstream star would receive only one Oscar nomination (Best Sound). The Last of the Mohicans Oscar performance was shameful but then 1992 was something of a hot mess over at AMPAS largely due to their need to honor Scent of a Woman (wtf?) and the scandal that drowned out the brilliance of Woody Allen's Husbands and Wives.

But let's not get distracted from the main point. That happens when we get stuck in retro Oscar loops.

Emma Thompson/Holly Hunter Double Oscar Nominations Meaning

4 April 2012 5:08 PM, PDT | Alt Film Guide | See recent Alt Film Guide news »

Writing about Emma Thompson possibly reprising her role as human rights lawyer Gareth Peirce made me remember comments I've read about the 1993 Academy Awards. In early 1994, Thompson was nominated for two Oscars: as Best Actress for James Ivory's social/psychological drama The Remains of the Day (photo) and as Best Supporting Actress for Jim Sheridan's family melodrama / political & prison drama In the Name of the Father. That same year, Holly Hunter was another double nominee — the first (and to date only) time two performers have been in the running in two acting categories in the same year. Hunter was up for the Best Actress Oscar for Jane Campion's The Piano (photo) and as Best Supporting Actress for Sydney Pollack's The Firm. She eventually won for The Piano; she and Thompson lost in the Best Supporting Actress category to The Piano's Anna Paquin. Some have claimed »

Photos: 'MythBusters' Explosive Exhibition Comes To Chicago

15 March 2012 9:19 AM, PDT | Aol TV. | See recent Aol TV. news »

Chicago -- Who gets wetter, someone walking in the rain or running? Is it really possible to hang from a cliff by your fingers until help arrives like they do in the movies? And is Superman the only one who is faster than a speeding bullet?

Those are questions the Discovery Channel's "MythBusters" has asked for years, and starting Thursday, anybody who's wondered how long it takes to put on a superhero outfit in a phone booth – don't forget the cape – can answer them for themselves at Chicago's Museum of Science and Industry.

"MythBusters: The Explosive Exhibition," opens Thursday, marking the first time the show has taken such questions on the road. The Chicago exhibition, which runs through Sept. 3, is the first of a planned national tour that will include stops at several other U.S. cities.

25 Reasons To Hate The Oscars

26 February 2012 1:52 AM, PST | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

With the 2012 Oscar ceremony taking place tonight, I’ve rounded up the 25 worst Academy Awards decisions of the past quarter century to feed filmgoers collective rage. Many of these are outright bad winners, but I’ve also reserved special spots in this countdown for blunders in production, nominations, and existing in the first place.

So take a deep breath, go watch I Saw the Devil to get in the right mood, and dig in.

25. Fifty-Nine Years of Rocky History

I did not want to imply that the Academy was all sunshine and roses before 1988; so a brief history of their ineptitude seems in order. In fact, history is a perfect lead in because, even though this is reason number twenty-five, it underlies the basic principle that caused this list to manifest. The Academy never learns from its mistakes. It never changes.

There is plenty of fodder here for several »

Adam Sandler sets record with 11 Razzie nominations

When Adam Sandler’s bad, he’s really bad, according to voters for the Razzies, an Academy Awards spoof that singles out the worst movies of the year. Sandler received a record 11 nominations Saturday for the Razzies as star, producer or writer on three 2011 movies — Jack and Jill, Just Go with It, and Bucky Larson: Born to Be a Star. That more than doubled the previous record of five Razzie nominations held by Eddie Murphy for 2007′s Norbit. Adam Sandler Sets Record For Worst Movie

Santa Monica, Calif. — When Adam Sandler's bad, he's really bad, according to voters for the Razzies, an Academy Awards spoof that singles out the worst movies of the year.

Sandler received a record 11 nominations Saturday for the Razzies as star, producer or writer on three 2011 movies – "Jack and Jill," "Just Go with It" and "Bucky Larson: Born to Be a Star."

That more than doubled the previous record of five Razzie nominations held by Eddie Murphy for 2007's "Norbit."

Sandler's nominations include worst actor for both "Jack and Jill" and "Just Go with It" – and worst actress for "Jack and Jill," in which he plays a family man and his own twin sister.

Sandler also had two nominations as worst screen couple opposite Jennifer Aniston or Brooklyn Decker in "Just Go with It" and opposite Katie Holmes, Al Pacino or himself in "Jack and Jill."

Blu-ray Review: Remastered Anniversary Edition of Clint Eastwood’s Masterful ‘Unforgiven’

24 February 2012 11:10 AM, PST | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – Clint Eastwood’s “Unforgiven” is one of the most influential movies on my decision to become a film critic. And yet, as most people are, I was concerned that perhaps I viewed the film through the rose-colored glasses of perspective. Was it as good as I remembered? Does it hold up? Hell yes it does and it’s never looked better than it does on the stunning new transfer from Warner Brothers for its 20th anniversary Blu-ray.

Rating: 5.0/5.0

The special features have been available before and, of course, “Unforgiven” is one of those films that has played regularly on cable and done well on DVD since it simply dominated the Oscars almost twenty years ago (winning Best Picture, Best Director, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Editing in early 1993…how it lost Best Original Screenplay to “The Crying Game” is beyond me. I like Jordan’s film but it hasn »

5 Oscars Wins That We'd Love To See This Year (Even If They Won't Happen)

24 February 2012 10:02 AM, PST | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Sometimes, the nomination is the prize. Even in more open years than this one (where many of the major prizes have been locked in for weeks, if not months), only two or three of the nominees have had a realistic chance of winning, with the others merely filling out the field. Which is not to say that they're not deserving. Indeed, quite often, the anointed winner is in that position because they're overdue, or they're part of a film that's sweeping the Oscars in general, or any one of a number of reasons.

Sometimes, the most deserving winner is the one that stands no chance of actually picking up the prize. So, with the Oscars only slightly more than 48 hours away, we've picked five wins that, while extremely unlikely, would make us entirely delighted if they happened. Let us know any potential wins of your own that would make your »

The Essentials: The 5 Best Denzel Washington Performances

10 February 2012 9:58 AM, PST | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Sometimes, winning an Oscar seems to change things for an actor. Look at Al Pacino, who's barely taken anything worth his time since he won for "Scent of a Woman" in 1992, or Kevin Spacey, who starred in a string of dull would-be-heartwarmers after picking up his gold for "American Beauty." And you could argue the same for Denzel Washington. He's irrefutably one of the most charismatic screen presences around, with even more gravitas than ever before as he closes on his 60s. But since he won Best Actor from the Academy for "Training Day," his film roles seem to have been a variation on a theme; thrillers that sometimes work, sometimes don't, but rarely leave you reeling the way his best work does, with his real energy seemingly reserved for directing work or stage performances like "Julius Caesar" and "Fences" (the latter of which won him a Tony). The Oscars: The ‘Least Worst’ Formula

8 February 2012 7:02 PM, PST | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

Throughout the first half of February, the Sound On Sight staff will take a look at the Academy Awards.

With the biggest night of the cinematic year coming up on the 26th February, the nominations are all set and confirmed, and the potential recipients are on a presidential-like campaign trail which is one part professional self promotion, one part shameless exercise in popularity competition; exciting times for sure, and a great time to be a bookie.

However, if there’s one thing to learn from following the ceremony for a number of years, it’s that it will not be unpredictable, aside from a possible if unlikely shock win or two, and that it certainly won’t be entirely satisfying.

It may sound cynical to suggest that the Academy Awards follow a specific formula, and that’s because it is. The theme running up to the actual event is of Oscar mistakes over the years, »

Blu-ray Review: Denzel Washington in Spike Lee’s Timeless ‘Malcolm X’

8 February 2012 1:49 PM, PST | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – Spike Lee has been getting national buzz again after the Sundance premiere of his controversial “Red Hook Summer” and the ageless Denzel Washington is back in the spotlight as his latest action vehicle, “Safe House,” premieres in theaters on Friday. It seems a perfect time for a Blu-ray release to bring audiences back to one of their career highlights. Over twenty years ago, the two collaborated on their most artistically rewarding venture, the epic “Malcolm X,” a fantastic film that has held up remarkably well, in no small part due to the excellent HD transfer from Warner Bros.

Rating: 4.5/5.0

There’s an entire generation who probably has no idea about the controversy that swirled around Lee’s “Malcolm X.” First, it was originally going to be directed by Norman Jewison, which seemed like an unusual choice for a film about such an important figure of the civil rights movement. »

Top 10 TV stars we’d like to see more of on the big screen

17 January 2012 3:30 AM, PST | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

They light up the small screen, but have seen relatively little exposure in the movies. Here’s James’ of TV stars we’d love to see on the big screen…

Straddling the fine line between success and failure in Hollywood is like walking a tightrope of future career persecution and retrospective judgement.

Success on the TV screen is not always amply rewarded with a success on the big screen. There are a few ways to make the cut – reinvent your career through TV (Keifer Sutherland style), take the path less trodden with a series of slow-burning support roles (Jk Simmons) or have a huge hit on TV simply too large to ignore (Ricky Gervais).

Hollywood is a bit like an elitist private members club – once you’re in, you’re in, but cracking it has proven far too difficult for this list of talented actors in the past. We, the people, »

Over/Under: ‘Scent of a Woman’ vs. ‘Goodbye Solo’

10 January 2012 9:40 AM, PST | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

You might assume that over the course of his forty-some year acting career, Al Pacino has probably won enough Oscars to stock a whole trophy room, but actually he’s only won once. It was for his performance as a blind, pissed-off, ex-military man with plans to kill himself after indulging in a weekend of fine food and fine escorts in Scent of a Woman. The movie was kind of a big deal back in the early 90s, getting nominated for a bunch of awards and winning everybody’s grandma and grandpa’s hearts in the theaters. Plus, Pacino had a catchphrase in the movie – “hoo-ah!” – which got referenced and quoted (to an annoying degree) for years after. In 2009, Ramin Bahrani made a movie about a similarly pissed off old white guy who has made a conscious decision and an appointment to kill himself called Goodbye Solo. It didn’t have any name actors like an Al »
