'Beverly Hills Cop' is 25 Years Old Today... Can You Believe It?

5 December 2009 2:38 AM, PST | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

Reading up on the history of Beverly Hills Cop, it never should have worked. By the time the movie went into production, there were about 8 billion different versions of the script. The final product was basically scotch-taped together from those different versions and whatever else didn't work was improvised by the cast.

Way back when, the story looked like a star vehicle for Al Pacino or James Caan in what would have been a much more serious take on the story. Then Mickey Rourke was attached. Then Rourke walked. Sylvestor Stallone came on board for an even bloodier version that never came to fruition because it would have been too expensive (reportedly Stallone took many of that version's ideas and made Cobra. I'm assuming it was most of the really bad ideas). So what did the studio do with what was once a serious tale of revenge? They made it a comedy. »

Scenes We Love: Half Baked

20 October 2009 12:15 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Right off the bat, I want to make it clear that you don't have to be half-baked to enjoy Half Baked. But if you thought Pineapple Express was hilarious, and you haven't seen Half Baked, it's high time you rectify this problem. Sure, Pineapple Express had James Franco as a drug dealer slash nice Jewish boy overly concerned with his Bubbe, and it had Danny McBride wigging out in his normal (i.e. awesome) way, and yeah, it was almost the perfect stoner crime caper.

But Half Baked has all that and more! It has Dave Chappelle as both a janitor at a lab that just happens to produce pharmaceutical-grade marijuana and a hip-hop star named Sir Smoke-a-Lot who, when high, complains, cries, and complains that he needs a "backiotomy." It has Guillermo Diaz as Scarface, who wants you to know he's Cuban, B! And it has Jim Breuer in »

Chris O'Donnell and Michael Fasbender in the Irish side of upcoming TV and DVDs (IrishCentral)

25 September 2009 2:45 AM, PDT | IrishCentral | See recent IrishCentral news »

On the Irish DVD front, look for the acclaimed indy horror flick “I Sell the Dead.” Written and directed by Dubliner Glenn McQuaid and starring Ron Perlman and Dominic Monaghan, the film played in art houses over the summer and earned impressive reviews. On the Hollywood DVD front, Irish actor Michael Fassbender was among the stars of Quentin Tarantino’s kill-Nazis film “Inglourious Basterds.” (“Centurion” and “Jonah Hex” are two of Fassbender’s upcoming projects.) British actor Steve Coogan (whose parents were Irish immigrants) has been in films such as “Tropic Thunder” and the “Night at the Museum” films. But he became famous for his work on the BBC, which has just released a 14-disc set of Coogan sketches, including his famous creations “Alan Partridge” and “Tony Ferrino.” Finally, the new TV season will see the return of Irish-American small-screen veterans Ed O’Neill and Chris O’Donnell. Anwar's Citizenship Anguish

4 June 2009 12:05 PM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Actress Gabrielle Anwar became an American citizen in time to vote for Barack Obama at last November's U.S. presidential election.

The British born star, who famously tangoed with Al Pacino in 1992 movie Scent of a Woman, has lived in the U.S. for decades - but only applied to switch her nationality last year, when she was given the chance to help Obama win the race for the White House.

And she admits she never realised how tough it would be choosing her new home over her country of birth.

Anwar explains, "I did it very recently. The whole experience was a little strange.

"They asked me if there was a war between the United States and Britain, which would I defend. I found it really hard. Am I supposed to destroy all my friends and family?" »

Al Pacino Will Blink

13 May 2009 1:02 AM, PDT | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

Al Pacino is in talks to play a lead role in the Stephen Gaghan-helmed adaptation of the Us bestseller Blink. Written by Malcolm Gladwell, Blink makes the intriguing case for 'thin-slicing' - the theory that spontaneous decisions are often better than more considered ones. Pacino will play the estranged father of an idealistic teacher from downtown New York. The two reconnect early in the piece with Pacino persuading the boy to use his 'blinking' skills to make a tonne of cash on Wall Street. The script, which is being touted to distributors at Cannes, is described as Scent Of A Woman meets Wall Street. The once-great Pacino hasn't made a hit movie since er, hmm... well, it's been a while, so we've got fingers crossed for a return to form. Gaghan, of course, is the screenwriter-cum-director behind the brilliantly mind-bending Syriana, so it's safe to expect an intelligent, thoughtful piece of filmmaking. »
