Unfortunately this dvd of a great movie has some technical shortcomings. The source print is reasonably clean, but it is was very unstable during the film-to-video transfer. This results in the picture constantly shifting by one or two pixels in all directions. Together with the rather grainy master, this is not a very good start for a lossy data compression algorithm like MPEG 2. But the compressionists did a rather good job on this, and so there are not many disturbing compression artifacts. Most problems, the other being mostly some aliasing, a bit of ringing and not so perfect contrast and colors, ware present in the video master before the compression.
Altough there are some problems, this dvd is still very enjoyable and with the anamorphic enhancement it's preferable to the laserdisc. But it's obvious, that this transfer is not up to today's standards.

Universal chose not to remix the soundtrack for this DVD, which is fine. Not every movie which was originally mixed for Dolby Stereo has to be remastered in Dolby Digital 5.1. The soundtrack of this dvd was very good to begin with and there is not much they could have improved. Dynamic and frequency range are very good, only the center channel sounds sometimes a bit bandwidth limited. Music and sound effects are great and the subtle surrounds, which are mostly used to create atmosphere, are quite effective.
