This is a wonderful movie about some very good people and some very bad people caught up in events largely but not totally beyond their control. Set in turn of the century Montreal, it examines relations between Italian immigrants and French Canadians. The near sepia tone of the cinematography plus the excellent settings capture the mood and spirit of the place and time. There are many scenes which could have been movie cliches --- don't want to give too much away --- but they are handled uniquely. The trial and verdict are an example. (Again I don't want to write a spoiler. Let's just say a classic courtroom scene is handled in a very non classic manner.) Without fancy camera work or elaborate sets, they've still managed to create a picture which is both visually beautiful and dramatically compelling.
