Beautiful elegiac mood piece, 12 July 2005

It's a few years since I saw this film - on a cheap vcd from the video shop in Sai Kung, Hong Kong. I checked out the IMDb page because I thought there'd be lots of rave reviews... but there's nothing... what's going on...? This is a superb film, extremely intense and thoughtful. There's a brother and his cute little sister, both a bit odd (one guy has lost his memory, the girl lives in a world of her own). They seem to be fending for themselves and drifting into decadence and obscurity.

The pace is slow, and very evocative of depression (which helps emphasise the happy moments) and there is very little dialogue, which is only to its benefit. Some lovely, quite tender scenes drift through your consciousness long after the film is over - in fact I'm still thinking about it.

As soon as I'd watched it I watched it over again - something I very rarely do - and it was even better. I can only imagine the film got a very limited release and it is not well known. You'd better go to Sai Kung to find it...

Beautiful, Quiet and Strange, 12 December 2005

I saw this film years ago at the ICA in London. And for some reason i think about this film a lot. It has really gotten into the dream space in my head.

The film begins with some Polaroids of a young boy and a young girl. A female voice over tells us who these people are...they are brother and sister, she is seven and he is eight. She goes on to say that when she was seven and he was eight, she told her brother that she would marry him.

And then we are in the present day. Her brother, all grown up has had an accident, he is in hospital and he has lost his memory. So what does she do? She goes to visit him and tells him she is his husband and that is kind of how they live...as husband and wife. That's basically the set up. Will she get way with it. Will he get his memory back? Is it right or wrong? This is a very stark and still film. The cinematography is beautiful. There is very little dialogue and the pace is slow. But the plot is strong and i member how much i cared about these people that by the end i was on the edge of my seat. This is a gorgeous unforgettable dreamlike film that really does deserve to be seen by more people.
