User Reviews

Only if you like sex & nudity.

First of all, I must say that when it comes to sex on film my tastes have little to do with Zalman King's slow and supposedly arty video clip style. I am more into Paul Verhoeven's direct, take-no-prisoners approach, and I think Basic Instinct is a much more accomplished piece of work than Nine And A Half Weeks or Wild Orchid. That said, I don't find Red Shoe Diaries totally disposable, but I do find it less enjoyable and more pretentious than The Hunger series or that 1980's Canadian show called The Hitchhiker.

Of the three stories in this tape, the first one, called Safe Sex, is the least bad, thanks to Joan Severance's performance. She plays a woman who shares a cab with a stranger (Steven Bauer) and they both begin a strange relationship, meeting in flat just to make love without even knowing each other's names. Severance, unlike the female leads in the other two segments, is kind enough to deliver some full frontal nudity. As for S. Bauer... Well, he is not exactly my favorite actor. An additional problem is that during the last ten minutes the episode stops being sexy and turns into a soap-opera, but by then the goods have already been delivered, so who cares anyway?

The second story, You Have The Right To Remain Silent, deals with a female police officer played by Denise Crosby (yes, the same Denise Crosby who left Star Trek: TNG claiming that she was underused and that the producers only wanted her to look sexy). This officer feels attracted to a man (Robert Knepper) who attends the same gym where she works out. She feels attracted to him just because he is the only guy there who doesn't pay any attention to her, so one night she kidnaps this man and takes him cuffed to a deserted building where she makes love to him. Most of us guys have had this kind of fantasy: Being kidnaped by an attractive woman who wants to have sex with you. While watching this segment the face of the viewer soon matches Knepper's bored expression as they both are forced to sit through Crosby's never-ending speech about herself, her feelings for this guy, etc, etc. The final pay off is not worth the wait, because the moment when Crosby finally removes her bra is really disappointing, and the following sex scene is very badly shot and edited (In my humble opinion, Andrea Thompson would have been a much better casting choice; but I guess she was virtually unknown at the time).

In Double Dare, the third and final story, Laura Johnson is a married woman who exchanges messages via fax with a man (Arnold Vooslo, aka The Mummy) she sees every day through her window. The work in two buildings in opposite sides of the same road and one day they start to dare each other to remove their clothes and so on. Since they actually never meet in the same room, the woman uses her unsuspecting husband to fulfill the fantasies she shares with the other man. Though Johnson is not a great actress, she is attractive enough to spice the episode up. Too bad that the sex scenes with her husband are very short and poorly staged (again), but at least you get to see her bare breasts a couple of times. By the way, fans of Arnold Vooslo must be warned that he is always seen in the distance except in a short scene near the end, so if you want to rent this tape only to see him play a role other than the Mummy, you better rent Hard Target instead.
