Spike Lee and Viacom Case Settled

8 July 2003 | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Movie director Spike Lee and media giant Viacom Inc. have settled their dispute over whether the conglomerate can rename its Tnn cable network Spike TV. The Do The Right Thing filmmaker's attorney confirmed that the legal fight is over between the two parties yesterday, a move which apparently allows Viacom to make the name change. Attorney Terry Gross says, "The case is settled." At the same time, New York Judge Walter Tolub lifted the injunction he issued last month which barred Viacom from using the Spike name. The settlement came just one day before both sides had been ordered to appear before Tolub in court. Malcolm X director Lee had argued that the name change was an attempt to "hijack" his image and prestige. Viacom had countered that Spike was a common name. Details of the settlement were not revealed. »
