The man who nearly directed Seven

How Ernest Dickerson nearly directed Seven, just as the film was about to be canned...

Having had what can best be described as an unpleasant experience making Alien 3, David Fincher was very picky when choosing his second film as director. He eventually opted for Seven, starring Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt, and the resulting film would set up the film career he’s had since. There’s still an argument that it’s his best film.

However, it wasn’t a movie he was originally set to direct.

Instead, Ernest Dickerson, who broke through with 1992’s Juice, was on the lookout for a horror film to make in the early 90s. On the Post Mortem podcast, he revealed that he changed agents, and “the first two scripts that they gave me… one was Surviving The Game. »

Film Review: ‘All Eyez on Me’

15 June 2017 4:12 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Sleekly shaven-headed, with a pirate bandana, a gangsta’s dripped-in-death tattoos, and the liquid stare of an Arabian prince, Tupac Shakur was the matinee idol of hip-hop superstars: not the fiercest rapper, not the most virtuosic or visionary, but a figure of “hard” ferocity who elevated street nihilism by fusing it with a certain lovesexy bravura. For a while, he was as much a movie star as he was a rap star (and he would have been a bigger one had his legal troubles not scared off the Hollywood establishment). On some level, Tupac’s life always seemed like a movie playing out in front of you — not just the hair triggers of bloodshed, but his whole contradictory dance of activism and thuggery, commitment and celebrity.

All Eyez on Me,” the messy, hugely flawed, but fascinating biographical drama that has now been made about him, channels those contradictions, even if »

Movie Review – All Eyez on Me (2017)

15 June 2017 3:15 PM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

All Eyez on Me, 2017.

Directed by Benny Boom.

Starring Demetrius Shipp Jr, Jamal Woolard, Danai Gurira, Kat Graham, Jamie Hector, Lauren Cohan, Dominic L. Santana, Grace Gibson, and Harold House Moore.

Synopsis:

The true and (supposedly) untold story of the prolific rapper, poet, and actor Tupac Shakur.

Did you know Tupac took up ballet when he was a teenager? Did you know that he dated the daughter of the local chapter of the Communist Party USA? Did you know that Tupac’s rap career began as a roadie and as a background dancer to Digital Underground?

The answers to those questions should be in this biopic. A film with the subtitle: ‘The Untold Story of Tupac Shakur’ one would expect some interesting anecdotes. Instead, the film offers an inane and uninspiring biopic that’s more interested in skimming over his life, briefly looking at some details, and project the public »

Rotterdam ‘17: World premiere of Ernest Dickerson’s ‘Double Play’

31 January 2017 6:15 AM, PST | Sydney's Buzz | See recent Sydney's Buzz news »

Ernest Dickerson is a client of manager Jennifer Levine who told me about this film in Sundance!

International Film Festival Rotterdam (Iffr) presented the world premiere of “Double Play” with the King of Netherlands attending along with the cast and crew. American filmmaker Ernest Dickerson (“Juice”, “The Wire”) directed the film version of the internationally lauded novel Double Play by Curaçaoan author Frank Martinus Arion. The film features a host of Caribbean, American and European actors including Brit Lennie James, the Tony Award nominated Saycon Sengbloh and Oscar winner Louis Gossett Jr.

An ostensibly simple game of dominoes unfurls a portrait of Antillean society in Double Play. In 1973, Frank Martinus Arion (1936–2015) provided a unique insight into culture and society on Curaçao during the tumultuous transition from Dutch colonial rule to autonomy in his successful novel Double Play. The film adds a contemporary perspective. The audience sees what lay behind the »
