This year, the Lausanne Underground Film & Music Festival (Luff) celebrates its 20th anniversary refusing, still and yet again, to conform to the constraints of mainstream by showcasing underground and eclectic artistic projects. A selective retrospective of Pakistanis director Jamil Dehlavi is in the programme that has just been unveiled. The full line-up of the Festival is now online on the Official Website.
Beyond Pakistan : The Mystical Cinema of Jamil Dehlavi
In the presence of Jamil Dehlavi
A visual storyteller guided by his intuitions, Jamil Dehlavi has been eluding all attempts at classification for over 40 years. Born to a French mother, he grew up in Europe, following the relocations of his father, a Pakistani diplomat. He then studied law in England, cinema in New York, and returned to Pakistan to make his first films… before being temporarily thrown out of the country! His films are, of course, like him, shifting yet stable,...

Luke Skywalker wandering over to the dark side? How about Rey succumbing to the allure of Supreme Leader Snoke? And don’t even get us started on the pint-sized porgs.
Yes, the rumor mill for Star Wars: The Last Jedi is operating at full tilt, and with nine kinds of fan theories already ricocheting off the walls of the Internet, the sequel’s director Rian Johnson recently waded through the speculation to give his own two cents on the current Star Wars gossip.
And though he naturally refrained from mentioning specifics, Johnson admitted that fans “haven’t really nailed the big stuff” when it comes to The Last Jedi‘s actual story. Which is just as well, given there are only 10 days standing between now and the film’s release.

We're only days away from Star Wars: The Last Jedi arriving in theaters and now Daisy Ridley is taking the opportunity to tell you that your Rey Theory sucks! Ridley told ScreenRant that Rey was not immaculately conceived, but would not speak more about her family tree or lineage.
When asked if she had read any fan theories online that were correct about the origin of her character she simply responded with, "No!"
"I mean, I’ve read a fan theory about Immaculate Conception. In fact, that was the only one that I read because someone directed me toward it and I was like you should get to work. Immaculate Conception. Then someone told me that I was actually Snoke or something or other, and it was time travel and I do think it’s hilarious that there’s this like great character and everyone was trying to attribute it to another character.

This pious digimation of the Christmas story contains nothing to frighten the donkeys with its rote wisecracks and slavish devotion to the Pixar formula
Some films are fated to be no more than the sum of their production companies. This seasonal digimation is almost exactly what you might imagine from a collaboration between Sony’s evangelical offshoot, Affirm Films, and Narnia deliverers Walden Media: it takes an idea with the potential for irreverent fun – retelling the Nativity from the animals’ perspective – then plays everything straighter than the average Sunday-school sermon.
Little donkey Boaz’s quest to escape his yoke and serve some higher purpose meets the religious brief; accompanying him through the usual series of helter-skelter set pieces, the rotely wisecracking Dave the dove swiftly puts paid to hopes of divine inspiration, while kooky sheep Abby hews so close to Ellen DeGeneres’ Dory in personality that you can hear the Pixar lawyers’ phones vibrating.

Police in Lawrence, Massachusetts, have arrested a man who allegedly stole the purse of an 80-year-old woman as she was cleaning up her late veteran husband’s grave site ahead of Memorial Day, People confirms.

Pregnancy and childbirth are intensely physical events. Despite their bodily primacy, these experiences are freighted with various significations, running the gamut from the woman-centered skill sets of midwifery to the all-too-frequent scaremongering and misinformation of anti-choice politics. This is not surprising since bodies have their semiotic dimension. Everything has meaning. However, the fact that these human events are unavoidably located on and in the female body—a body whose very generative capacity has historically made it an object of fear—seems to produce an excess of verbiage, a lot of it denigrating or punitive. And often this discussion leaves little room for other knowledges—the haptic, the gestural, the somatic. So what if, for a brief moment, we observed silence? To be clear, silence is no solution to political aggression against women. The more persistent the braying of misogynist forces who claim to know best, the louder the protests must be,...

A baby girl was born "pregnant" with twin fetuses, researchers say. The girl, who was born at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Hong Kong in 2010, was originally believed to have two tumors in her abdomen, according to a new report in the Hong Kong Medical Journal. But it turned out they were two fetuses instead. The fetuses were developed enough that they each had a spine, intestines, bones with bone marrow, "primitive" brain matter, an anus, a rib cage and an umbilical cord, the study reports. It's been almost 20 minutes since the last Star Wars speculation so it was time for the rumor mill to start cranking out something for us to mull on over the weekend. The powers that be settled on a twist on a classic that's been circulating for months. Ever since Lupita Nyong'o and Gwendoline Christie were officially cast, fans and journalists have been scrambling to guess their roles. Now it seems one of them might play the villain. Of course this is old news to anyone who's had their ear to the ground listening for Star Wars tidbits like the people of Tatooine listen for the slightest whisper of the approach of Sand People. As far back ,as April there were rumblings of a female villain to contrast the sausage fest that has been 'Star Wars' Sith Summits. Before she was even confirmed, anonymous sources had Lupita Nyong'o pegged to play Asajj Ventress.

Wow, it’s only January and I can already say we officially have the funniest movie of 2014 – The Legend Of Hercules. Honestly, I was in stitches the whole time, busting some sweet belly laughs! Wait, you’re telling me Renny Harlin’s Hercules film was supposed to be a serious, engaging, dramatic adventure meant to exploit the romance and heartbreaking Greek tragedy of Hercules’ story? Oh, um, well, that’s awkward. In that case, Harlin’s January blockbuster is a monumental failure on all accounts, presenting a visually disgraceful film that makes Clash Of The Titans look like a 3D masterpiece. In all honesty, this Herculean tale is nothing short of an embarrassment, and although I’m a Twilight hater, Kellan Lutz avoids my wrath (for the most part) – consider yourself lucky, six-pack.

Pope Francis on Friday cleared Pope John Paul II for sainthood, approving a miracle attributed to his intercession and setting up a remarkable dual canonization along with another beloved pope, John Xxiii. In a major demonstration of his papal authority, Francis decided to make John Xxiii a saint even though the Vatican hasn't confirmed a second miracle attributed to his intercession. The Vatican said Francis had the power to "dispense" with the normal saint-making procedures to canonize him on his own merit, without a miracle. The ceremonies are expected before the end of the year. The date of Dec. 8 has been floated as one possibility,...

The Ansa news agency reported that a commission of cardinals and bishops met Tuesday to consider John Paul's case and signed off on it. A Vatican official confirmed that the decision had been made some time back and that Tuesday's meeting was essentially a formality. It’s been quite a year for Justin Bieber. Oh, we don’t mean his musical career or relationship with Selena Gomez. We’re referring to all the truly weird scandals he has somehow gotten himself embroiled in. For example, now the hamster community hates the Biebs for giving his pet Pac away to a fan. “The moment that hamster was handed off to a screaming girl in a harsh, frenzied environment was likely the moment it gazed at the short path to its doom,” claimed the California Hamster Association, who honestly sound like the most amazing pack of divas we could ever hope to meet. It’s not like the fan immediately ate the hamster or anything. To our knowledge. It seems fitting that Justin finishes out the year with a new odd scandal after the parade of weirdness that has plagued him for the last twelve months…

American Horror Story: Asylum Second Teaser Features Stylish Blue Coat and Creepy Nuns
More creepy nuns haunt the second American Horror Story: Asylum teaser, which was just released a little over an hour ago on the official Facebook webpage.
This teaser takes a different approach than its predecessor, which was a nerve wrecking image of simplicity shrouded in mystery. The new teaser, which is called "Blue Coat," features the titular item in a David Lynch-esque dreamscape setting, continuing the seemingly running theme of nuns. The clip also features the return of the American Horror Story theme song, albeit a remixed version of the eerily catchy theme. Check out the teaser below and analyze it to the best of your knowledge:

Electrick Children
Written and directed by Rebecca Thomas
USA, 2012
Electrick Children’s lead Julia Garner played a brief but memorable role in 2011’s Martha Marcy May Marlene, which Rebecca Thomas’ film bares superficial comparisons to in that they both concern members of ritualised, insular societies in contemporary America; both also happen to be the debut features for their directors. Thomas’ film takes a far less disturbing approach to the concept and is rooted in an existing spiritual type of commune, that of Mormonism through which the director herself was once raised. In this sense, the film bares a stronger resemblance to something like Peter Weir’s Witness, refraining from any outright indictment of the isolated way of life and using the culture as fuel for a narrative extending beyond the commune’s boundaries.

You heard it here first, PopWatchers: Immaculate conception is the new black. On last night’s Keeping Up With the Kardashians, Kim Kardashian revived an old trend by confessing to friends that she is leaning toward artificial insemination if she isn’t pregnant by 40. It was a fair enough statement — until Kim added, “I would feel like Mary — like Jesus is my baby, you know?”
Okay, Kim. It’s real-talk time. Very few things are certain in this world, but I am quite sure that any of us with at least a dial-up connection can confirm that you are no candidate for a virgin birth.

It may be Star Wars day (May the fourth be with you), but how seriously should we take the growing church of Jediism?
Today is Star Wars Day, being May the Fourth. (Say the date slowly, several times.) Around the world, film buffs, storm troopers and Jedi are gathering to celebrate one of the greatest science fiction romps of all time. It would be easy to let the fan boys enjoy their day and be done with it. However, Jediism is a growing religion in the UK. Although the results of the 2001 census, in which 390,000 recipients stated their religion as Jedi, have been widely interpreted as a pop at the government, the UK does actually have serious Jedi.

Did anyone find this the funniest episode of "American Horror Story" yet? Not exactly laughing at the show, but just the most "black comedy" episode so far? Hmmm. This one almost begs a re-viewing, it was so off-the-walls.
As far as the main plot goes, the flashback this week is to an actual murder - Elizabeth Short, a.k.a. the Black Dahlia, from 1947. In this mythology, she came to The House to see a dentist, who put her under and raped her, then discovered he accidentally killed her. But lucky for him, Dr. Montgomery's ghost is lurking about and ready to slice 'n dice.
In the present, Elizabeth appears as a patient to Ben, whose only desire is to be famous. Hayden informs her that she is, in fact, quite famous.
Speaking of Hayden, she's still obsessed with getting back together with Ben, but she (kind of hilariously) seduces...

Neil Burger directs Bradley Cooper, Robert De Niro, and Abbie Cornish in the taut thriller Limitless, which makes its Blu-ray and DVD debut today, July 19th. Director Guy Ritchie has axed plans to hold live music nights at his London pub after attracting complaints from neighbours and a local church official.
The Sherlock Holmes director sparked objections from nearby residents after applying for a music licence to hold gigs at The Punch Bowl in the city's posh Mayfair neighbourhood.
Locals worried about noise levels were outraged by his proposal, while Father William Pearsall at the nearby Jesuit Church of the Immaculate Conception claimed nightly gigs would "contribute" to nuisance.
Ritchie dropped his bid on Wednesday, a day before his application was due to be considered by Westminster Council's licensing sub-committee on Thursday.
It is believed the request was withdrawn with a view to reapplying later this year, after Ritchie has consulted residents.

Ben Affleck on the set of Terrence Malick's currently untitled next film
Photo: Benny Polacca/Osage News The Osage News snapped a few pictures from the Oklahoma set of Terrence Malick's untitled follow-up to Tree of Life. The pics show Ben Affleck on the film's set and even give us a brief glimpse of Malick himself, a director who rarely seems to have a new picture taken of him.
Details on the film are sparse other than the fact it's being referred to as a romance and stars Affleck, Rachel Weisz, Javier Bardem, Rachel McAdams, Olga Kurylenko and Barry Pepper. However, both Pepper and Bardem are rumored to be priests in the film. Scenes were shot in the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Pawhuska, which features stained glass windows with depictions of Osages, and the historic Triangle Building in downtown Pawhuska.

Religion is a sensitive subject, which of course, is why it's such a fun subject to discuss. I've been exposed to organized religion for the bulk of my life. I went to church every Sunday until I was twelve (I was grounded for a month for my eventual refusal to partake of the holy institution when I finally made my own decision) and my mother-in-law is a devout Roman Catholic who cried when her daughter and I weren't going to be married in a holy house. In the last few years, my parents have re-found the lord and took to what can only be called church shopping. Initially I was skeptical and quite derisive in my view of their kicking of holy tires. To me it was amusing and somewhat hypocritical that The One True God has so many different incarnations depending on which sub-sect of whatever faith you decide is right for you.

Director James Cameron has urged Canadians to pave the way for a greener environment by preserving the country's precious oil reserves.
The Avatar moviemaker toured the oil sands in Alberta this week (begs 27Sep10) and spoke out during his trip to call on officials in Canada to manage their "great gift" with care.
The sands contain the world's second largest reserves of crude, and Cameron has warned it could become a "curse" if it's not properly managed.
He says, "It can also be a great gift to Canada and to Alberta if it is managed properly... It is impossible to imagine a refining process that did not have negative environmental impacts. It would have to be some kind of Immaculate Conception... Personally I believe that this is an incredible resource and I certainly understand why everybody is stampeding toward it with this desire to exploit it as rapidly as possible because it's the single largest reserve of potential crude oil next to Saudi Arabia.
"And in an energy starved future, that's going to... put Canada in a different position. The world is looking at what you here in Alberta do, and the decisions that are made here are really going to shape the energy policy of the future. The world is going to look to Canada for leadership."...

While early announcements from the Palace in Monaco didn't go beyond stating a general wedding date of next summer, Thursday morning delivered the desired specifics: Prince Albert II and Charlene Wittstock will marry in a civil ceremony to take place in the Throne Room of Monaco's Pink Palace next July 8. In addition, said the Palace, on July 9 a religious ceremony will be held for Albert, 52, and Wittstock, 32, "in a site to be confirmed later." Sources tell People that plans call for the religious ceremony - which will be televised - to be held at Monaco's Notre Dame of the Immaculate Conception Cathedral.

Dominic West, the upper crust actor who's star of the hit TV show 'The Wire,' will marry a County Limerick woman at her family castle on the banks of the Shannon Estuary this weekend. It's an aristocratic setting that's about as far as it's possible to get from the mean streets of Baltimore and the hard-drinking, bed-hopping Detective that West plays in the series. The wedding will be held in Glin Castle, the home of West's Irish bride, Catherine FitzGerald who is a daughter of the 29th Knight of Glin, Desmond FitzGerald and his wife Madam Olda FitzGerald. The couple, who met when they studied at Trinity College, have three children. Dominic said: 'We met when we were both doing Irish literature in Trinity. I was born in Yorkshire and went to Eton, but I’d grown up with this romantic notion of wanting to live in Ireland,...

While Wednesday's official announcement that Prince Albert II of Monaco will marry South African former swimmer Charlene Wittstock provided no wedding date, the groom-to-be wasted no time in spilling the beans. "The marriage will take place next summer," the longtime bachelor, 52, told Nice-Matin for its Thursday morning editions. Come the nuptials next year, the two will tie the knot in two ceremonies: an intimate civil service inside the Prince's 235-room palace, and a larger, religious one, in Monaco's Notre Dame of the Immaculate Conception Cathedral and which will be televised, sources tell People. Albert, the only son of the late...

I'm starting to find the backlash against vampires downright funny. A certain young adult phenomenon incites many studios to jump on the bloodlust bandwagon, and the hordes get antsy. But what about the zombies? We've got crazy zombies, Jane Austen zombies, zombies in a Zombieland, and my personal favorite, wordy Pontypool zombies. While the vamps flash it up on the big screen and make a fuss, the real zombie invasion seems not to be in reality, but in the movie theater. And now it's time to add one more to the pile.
Deadline reported at the end of last week that the zombie tide has moved from classic literature to pop sensations. Double Feature's Michael Shamberg and Stacey Sher have optioned Paul is Undead -- Alan Goldsher's novel where The Beatles are zombies. Not The Zombies, the St. Albans rock band whose music covered Bunny Lake is Missing and Dear Wendy...
