Special Features - Why We Love Christmas Films

Helen Murdoch on why we love Christmas films...

Gifts are being wrapped, trees are being propped up and the smell of mince pies is at every turn, it is of course Christmas, our favourite time of year. As a certified film addict, Christmas is the time of great movies as well, which got me thinking about what it is we love about them?

Although we’re grown up and have a zillion responsibilities, there’s nothing quite like sitting down and watching Home Alone on TV for the millionth time. We love to regress back to our childhood to enjoy the innocence of Christmas; this is why the Christmas film is imperative. We’ve all seen It’s a Wonderful Life and Miracle on 34th Street more times than we care to admit but Christmas films have the unique ability to never get dull. Even if you’ve got the DVD in your collection, »

'Home Alone 3,' Lost In Disney World: A Story I Pitched To John Hughes When I Was Eight

6 December 2012 12:04 PM, PST | Moviefone | See recent Moviefone news »

In 1994, when I was eight years old, I became obsessed with “Home Alone.” At the time, I owned both “Home Alone” and “Home Alone 2: Lost in New York” on VHS, along with two “Home Alone” posters, a “Home Alone” video game and even the novelization of “Home Alone” by Todd Strasser. I have no explanation for my fandom, other than the fact that I saw the film's protagonist, Kevin McCalister, as some type of hero, one who was forced to defend his house from two burglars on Christmas. Soon enough, I found myself writing a letter to the film's writer/producer John Hughes. Several months earlier, I had created a new chapter in the “Home Alone” series, and was now wondering whether Mr. Hughes would be willing to option it. At that point, my only knowledge of the filmmaker was that he was somehow involved with creating “Home Alone, »

Holiday Favorites 2012: Stephen Jannise, 'Home Alone 2'

29 November 2012 11:30 AM, PST | Slackerwood | See recent Slackerwood news »

Welcome to Holiday Favorites, a series in which Slackerwood contributors and our friends talk about the movies we watch during the holiday season, holiday-related or otherwise.

Our next holiday film pick comes from Stephen Jannise, the new film programmer for the Paramount and Stateside Theatres. His previous position was Film Program Director for Austin Film Festival. Stephen has chosen Chris Columbus' 1992 movie Home Alone 2: Lost in New York:

I recognize this pick probably isn't going to win me any respect points with anyone, yet I find myself compelled to offer a few thoughts in defense of this two-hour commercial for the Talkboy tape recorder. Sure, the narrative lazily regurgitates the story from the original Home Alone film almost verbatim, plot point for plot point, which means that two seemingly well-put-together parents somehow forget to bring their own child on vacation for a second time. Plus, by this point, »

Buzz From Home Alone Cast As A Villain In Alexander Payne's Nebraska

4 October 2012 12:43 PM, PDT | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Kids of the 90s may not know Devin Ratray by name, but they definitely know who he is. In 1990 and 1992 he played Buzz McCallister, older brother to Macaulay Culkin's Kevin McCallister in the blockbuster hits Home Alone and Home Alone 2: Lost in New York. And while that was his most memorable role, Ratray actually hasn't stopped acting since. In addition to taking small roles in movies like Surrogates and the upcoming R.I.P.D., he has also accumulated a good amount of television experience, making appearances on shows like all three versions of Law and Order, Supernatural, and, most recently, The Good Wife. And now Alexander Payne is giving him a shot in the director's next movie. Payne, who won an Academy Award earlier this year for his work on the script for his film The Descendants, has cast Ratray as the main villain in his next movie, Nebraska. »

Buy the former home of the late John Hughes for a mere $5.89 million

10 April 2012 11:55 AM, PDT | avclub.com | See recent The AV Club news »

The mansion that belonged to the late John Hughes, the house that Molly Ringwald built, has been listed for sale. For a mere $5.89 million, Chicagoland estate seekers can own a six-bedroom, 10-bath property in swanky Lake Forest complete with a three-car garage, six fireplaces, and a 50-foot-long swimming pool. Hughes’ old office is upstairs and features, “a wood-burning fireplace that bears the trademark of Hughes Entertainment within the mantle.” The family bought the house in 1988, meaning said office could, in fact, be the room where magical properties like Home Alone, Home Alone 2: Lost In New York »

Home Alone 5 is Happening

15 March 2012 3:05 PM, PDT | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

It's the gift that just keeps on giving! Some 22 years after the original Home Alone hit theatres and turned Macaulay Culkin into a superstar, production on the fifth installment in the Home Alone series is now underway, targeting a holiday 2012 release. Culkin, of course, dropped out of the franchise after the immediate follow-up, Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, with Home Alone 3 starring some other kid (but still being written by John Hughes, believe it or not). Many people probably aren't even aware that there was a Home Alone 4, but it was made for TV and released back in 2002. Now the fifth movie will follow the same path; it is scheduled to premiere on ABC Family as part of their "25 Days of Christmas" programming event. Hey, at least it's not a remake, right? According to Deadline, Home Alone 5 will star Malcolm McDowell, Debi Mazar, Edward Asner, Eddie Steeples, »

'SNL' writer John Mulaney on his new Comedy Central special and why he'll never make fun of 'Friday Night Lights'

27 January 2012 7:00 AM, PST | EW - Inside TV | See recent EW.com - Inside TV news »

Stand-up comedian and Saturday Night Live scribe John Mulaney makes plenty of pop culture references in his one-hour Comedy Central special New in Town: Among other jokes, there’s a well-delivered line about Ratatouille and even a pitch-perfect Def Comedy Jam take on Home Alone 2: Lost in New York. But Mulaney, who has an affinity for all things television (“I don’t daydream, I just think about things I saw on TV. I’ve noticed that sometimes I’ll be staring off and I’ll just be thinking about a commercial I saw when I was 10, or when »
